I'm looking to purchase a dedicated youth shotgun, just to have around for when I take kids or other small-statured hunters afield. I've narrowing it down to a few, and wanted to get some opinions from the HPA crew. I also wanted to make sure I wasn't missing any other viable options. I foresee this gun getting most of its exercise in the turkey woods, but I imagine as my niece and nephews get a little older, it will likely see some action with small game and waterfowl as well.

My only criteria that I'm really set on is A) Semi-auto action for softer recoil, B) Shorter LOP, C) full camo, and D) Reasonably cheap.

Here are the four that are currently on my short list:

Weatherby Sa-08 Waterfowler ~$600
SA08M5C2024PGM

Tristar Viper G2 Youth ~$490
24114

Tristar Raptor Youth ~$410
20202

Escort Youth ~$520
HAT215YOTE

Any thoughts or personal experiences with these guns would be much appreciated.

I have the Escort Magnum 20ga, which unless they have changed in the last few years is the same as the youth mod(just a shorter stock). That is a great little gun for an auto 20. Well put together and handles well. The only complaint I have with it was the shell cut off. It is counter intuitive, you would think with it pushed in it's in auto and out is cut off. Other way around. With it out so it operates as normal it catches on things and is a general pain as that is also the balance point. I ended up removing it.

I bought my son a tristar viper when he was 8.He's put thousands of rounds through it shooting trap and has killed a bunch of turkeys with it.It won't eject low brass Winchesters but it shoots rem low brass fine for some reason. It's light, kicks easy and doesn't break the bank. For a dedicated youth gun,it's hard to beat for the money.I bought him a 12ga compact Franchi affinity for Christmas this year(He's 11) and he does well with low brass target loads. It's recoil operated and the chinsy little recoil pad that it comes with doesn't cut the mustard.I just ordered a sims recoil pad and I'm sure that will make a difference. The compact Affinity 20 ga is an awesome youth shotgun as well but you need to upgrade the recoil pad.

Thanks all for the input. I ordered the Tristar Viper this morning from the LGS, and it should hopefully be in next week. Most of the guns I pick up are used, so I'm looking forward to having a new one to play with.

Now for the tricky part... finding a vendor that has 20-gauge Federal Heavyweight 7's in stock...

Put a Trulock turkey choke in that shotgun and you'll have a legitimate turkey slayer with Fed heavyweight#7

I've got a Trulock coming already. The FHW 7's... I'm having trouble finding them anywhere online in stock. I imagine I'll turn up a box or two somewhere over the next six weeks.
