I am a resident of Pennsylvania. I am a hunter and a shooter. I am a supporter of the second amendment.

As you must know, your SHOT Show promoter, Reed Expo, also produced the Great Eastern Outdoor and Sportsman's Show in Harrisburg, PA.

Over the weekend, Reed contacted their Harrisburg vendors and informed them that no assault rifles were to be displayed or shown. Not even pictures or posters. organizations that had assault riles as prizes for raffles could not sell tickets at the show. Accessories for assault weapons were also banned by Reed.

Pennsylvania sportsmen are outraged. Actually many sportsmen across the Mid Atlantic are outraged. Boycott of the show is now the watch word. The message boards, blogs, and now the outdoor press is alive with news, activism, and support for a ban.

Missing is a public statement by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and the NRA on this issue.

Reed is your promoter for the SHOT Show. They are available. Readily available.

Yet, from one of the leading gun rights organizations with a direct relation with the offending show promoter, we, sportsmen, hear nothing.

As startling, we hear nothing from your membership that is the gun industry as well.

Silence from the leadership and core of the gun rights community on an issue that cuts to the core of our constant battle on gun rights and ownership.

Just as being black and having a pistol grip doesn't make a gun bad; silence on your part isn't right. Nor expected.

If we, as supporters of our fundamental right to bear arms, is predicated on unison of message and purpose, NSSF can not stand silent on this issue. More so when you have face to face, one on one access and communication with Reed and their management team.

I am posting this letter on HuntingPA.Com. I will also post your response there or state non-response as well.

Sportsmen and shooters stick together. Time to fall in and get in step with the base.

God Bless You, It's good to know there are people like you who stand for something. I pray that "Sportsman" make a stand and support this without the idiotisy of "well You can't hunt with them" clouding the issue. Thank You

just a guess, but we will hear nothing until the shot show ends. please excuse me if it's already ended don't pay that much attention to it or it's dates.

other reason could be behind closed door talks and blasting them now would end those talks.

the group running the show has heard from me. it's been posted in the pa section of a bigger hunting site and my fb page, but will give the nra a little more time before jumping down their throats too

NRA Statement in Response to Reed Exhibitions' Decision to Ban Modern Sporting Rifles from the Eastern Sports & Outdoor Show

Posted on January 17, 2013

The National Rifle Association strongly disagrees with Reed Exhibitions' decision to ban Modern Sporting Rifles from the Eastern Sports Show in Harrisburg, PA, February 2-10. We encourage Reed Exhibitions to reconsider their position.

While this decision has come as a surprise and concern, we have made a commitment to our members in Pennsylvania and surrounding states and are eagerly looking forward to the opportunity to interact with as many as 250,000 fellow hunters and sportsmen. We encourage all attendees to stand and fight for the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens and not cower from our principles in the face of media pressure. We urge you to follow the NRA and the outdoor industry's lead by voicing your displeasure with Reed Exhibitions both before and during the show and encourage them to reconsider their position.

The NRA's future participation in the Eastern Sports & Outdoor Show will be determined by Reed Exhibitions actions in response to the concerns raised by the NRA, the outdoor industry, and America's law-abiding gun owners.

Here is how I see this NRA press release being accepted by the sportsmen community in general:

The NRA caved. Worse, this will be seen as a "don't do as I do, do as we trained you" thing.

Let me explain.

Over the years the NRA has conditioned sportsmen to various calls to action. Write, call, stand and be counted, boycott and other direct physical actions by members and supporters.

They use the email blasts as the fuse. The fuse lite by the local activist and on the internet. Seemingly without question, people take it and run. Direction given, action taken.

So after decades of such direction given in various forms of communication to members, members saw the clear path to follow with the show. Protest the decision by phone, mail, and email. Spread the word by all means possible. And boycott the show based on principal.

But, the leadership organization didn't lead the charge, nor in the press release did they encourage or direct the charge of individual members. Instead, they took the diplomatic road and left the rank and file member hanging out there swinging in the wind.

Does the NRA support the local and individual efforts where the show is concerned? It appears with a nod to the passage of the press release they want us to attend to support the vendors. But, doing so clearly supports the action of Redd Expo, the show promoter and the one responsible for the gun ban in the first place.

The NRA needs to understand that after years of training the rank and file member to react to calls of action, this very parsed and diplomatic statement isn't going to go over well with the rank and file member that demands more from the organization that has set the standard for common core reaction to such things.

The NRA doesn't have the ability to turn on or turn off the membership. Having trained them to be all in, and only backing off after a win, the NRA doesn't have the ability to take the middle ground . Nor do they have that light switch or dimmer switch to tone down the efforts of those on board with them.

The NRA needs to re-state the official position. If not, they too will be at the center of ire of many sportsmen. The current statement is going to tick a lot of people off due to the noncommittal and appeasing nature of the NRA in this instance.

Meanwhile, the rank and file members are out there calling for the time honored boycott and looking to punish or win. Thats the standard set and indoctrinated for so long and accepted and acted on by rote by membership.

The NRA only complicated their position on this.

Reed just gained an ally, or it will be seen and promoted by the average NRA gun rights person as that.

The internet is swift and all encompassing. A slight to sportsmen's efforts will not be lost in the fog. It will become an associated issue - on the net, and surly face to face in the show NRA booth.

NSSF posted a statement today - originally posted in the thread in Firearms Forum by Melody (PFSC) :

NSSF Statement on Reed Exhibitions' Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show

The National Shooting Sports Foundation strongly disagrees with the decision of the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show's management to disallow the display and sale of Modern Sporting Rifles at its 2013 exhibition. In our discussions with Reed Exhibitions, we have made this very clear.

While assuring us that all legally available firearms will be welcome at future Eastern Sports and Outdoor Shows, it was explained that this unfortunate decision was made in response to the planned actions of a single retailer that would have drawn significant unwelcomed media coverage at a time when firearms ownership is being assailed in the media. It is important to note that this year's show will continue to feature a wide variety of firearms.

However, it would be unfair to penalize the 1,200 exhibitors or the some 200,000 sportsmen and women who will attend the show by discouraging participation at a time when the hunting and shooting sports community needs to be united in the face of political challenges.

We urge industry exhibitors and attendees to participate in the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show as planned and encourage attendees to visit the Reed Exhibitions booth at the show to share their concerns and to then enjoy the show.

Statement from James Kroll (Dr Deer)

Dr Kroll is calling for a Boycott on the Harrisburg Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show. They have asked many of my friends that own gun shops and sporting shops to not display firearms or signs of gun manufactures that "They" feel are not appropriate.

So let me get this straight, they want us to unite at a place where what we want to unite about is not permitted. Fools, it comes down to money, plane tickets are bought, cars are rented, hotels are reserved, booth fees have been paid.

I'm starting to think the best thing the NRA can do is GO TO THE SHOW! We all boycott....and they go in to the lions den and recruit?!? Recruit and Educate everyone that passes by.

If that's their plan....then it's brilliant!
