Johnny ,

It is hard to believe that you are already at this point in life but may I be one of first to wish you a Happy 18th Birthday tomorrow and welcome you to adulthood. I have jokingly called this day “move out day” for a couple years now but I hope to God we ain’t there yet. Anyway, with a little research I came up with a guide for you on what your 18th birthday legally brings with it (and my thoughts on it in parenthesis ).

To other parents with kids this age , perhaps you can pass it along or adapt it for your kid or maybe it will just gives ya a chuckle. Took me time to do, so i hope it is worth your time to read. I do apologize for the length but I am long winded in such matters:

John,
As of midnight tonight, you can legally do these things in no particular order:

Ø Sign a binding contract (like an apartment lease)
Ø Vote in any election (except for liberal Democrats I mean who would)
Ø Go buy your own rifle or shotgun (and give all mine back, cleaned and oiled would be nice)
Ø Serve your country by going into the military (a lot of pride here always but lets wait til this President is retired if you do)
Ø Be called upon for jury duty (do your part to clean up the streets when it is just and proven)
Ø Be convicted/serve time in adult jail ( you will also be required to change your last name to “Who”. As in “Johnny who??”)
Ø Buy Tobacco products (no need cause Mom and I will kill ya long before tobacco use will)
Ø Work a 40 hour full time week + OT without our consent (hey you got it)
Ø Start a retirement plan, never too early (but only do this if you heed the tobacco warning above)
Ø Open your own bank account (one that will not be subject to the dreaded “Parent tax” )
Ø Own legal title to a vehicle (or apparently in your case many vehicles)
Ø Get your own car Insurance (like tomorrow morning, I got their number right here)
Ø Get sued or sue someone (avoid this two way street altogether, karma is always king and there is no easy money)
Ø Get married to a good honest woman (Might be a couple left, remember you only want to do this once in life so choose wisely and be patient)
Ø Donate blood to save a life (get a free doughnut and much good karma)
Ø Get a tattoo without our consent (restricted however to one that says “I love Mom”, the holy Cross or “Don’t tread on me”)
Ø Buy lottery tickets (this will support Mom and I later in life as seniors, win or lose you lower our rent/taxes)
Ø Work towards your own American Dream (just threw this in to get ya out of bed in the morning )

What you still CAN'T legally do for 3 MORE years
(Kind of seems like lawmakers discriminate against us hard working, freedom loving rednecks when you think about this):

** Drink an ice cold beer on a Friday night after your long 40+ hour work week (you still gotta drink them back in the woods by a campfire, tastes best there anyway)
**Take a shot of whiskey at deer camp to celebrate bagging your nice buck (heck you likely will be 21 by the time this happens again anyway)
**Buy and/or conceal a handgun to protect yourself, your freedoms, your family and what is yours (you know I can’t even joke about this right)

In all Seriousness here is what I hope and am confident you WILL do:
>> Make wise decisions that you know in your heart you can answer for in front of the Lord Jesus and your mother.
>>Be happy and enjoy the freedoms of being an adult with the understanding that it is always more expensive and has bigger consequences.
>>Think about your tomorrows just enough that it will not ruin your today OR your tomorrows.
>>Save and use cash, avoid credit as much as possible so you are always working to build your own wealth and not someone else’s.
>>Buy land and take good care of it , no one can make more and taking care of what God created for us is good for your soul.
>>Know when it is the right time, woman and situation to marry and start your family. You will know trust me on that.
>>Always give more to others than you need to receive yourself. Stay humble in success and fired up motivated in any failure situation.
>>Remember you were born into the best country in the world by God’s grace, many people died to keep it free, don’t give it up , NOT EVER!
>>Always come to me for advice on any of above cause I am your Dad, I have been there and I am so [censored] proud of you. My job is never done.

You are a true, honest and genuine person John. You got my respect , and I am sure as an adult you will earn the worlds too. HAPPY 18th Birthday , but remember you will always be my kid.

Happy Birthday

Some words of wisdom passed on to me from my Grandpa

The only thing you came into this world with is your name and it is the only thing you will take out so be sure and take care of it.

A man is no better than his word so if you say it you better do it.

Be responsible for you own actions, don't blame the things you do on others.

Happy birthday to John. Freedom and responsibility go hand in hand. When I first came on HuntingPa John was a little kid, now he could kick my sorry butt if he wanted to !
