Anyone shoot no excuse Conicals???

Looking for a conical for my 50 cal green mountain LRH fast twist barrel...

They sound like they are worth a try...

I have some Thor samples to test fit... the smallest size wouldn't even start in my TC barrel..

I'd like to try Conicals before going to sabots...

Not sure what 460gr of lead will do to a deer....that's a pile of energy...but at a slow enough speed that it should work wonderfully I'd imagine...

Not sure if anyone shoot em on here...?

I have a lifetime supply of the Buffalo Ball-ets.... essentially the same as the PA conical..

I've killed a pile of deer with them....

I don't know how they'll do in the fast twist...I'm guessing it'll like a longer bullet..and most my shots are 30-50yds tops... trajectory of a hefty hunk of lead isn't an issue..

I've looked at all this stuff before.

I used a 260gr Speer HP in an orange sabot in my 50-cal Renegade with decent results.

I've read of guys using 45-cal maxiballs in sabots as well in 50's and really liking what they got.

If you don't care about trajectory or reach......my vote is you bore that thing out for 58's like you were thinking of doing. Shoot a big fat round ball and enjoy the results.

I have a box of the 460 grain conicals I'll sell at a discount if you're interested. I bought two boxes prior to a Colorado elk hunt (where you can't use sabots) and it'll take me years to go through the first box I opened. PM me if you are interested .

Tdd..i could....or o could get a 58cal Colerain or Oregon barrel co barrel and sell the LRH barrel...which I doubt would be difficult...

Maybe I will see how she finishes...

I know I will build a 58 and never use the TC or this rifle after I get the 58....

I wanna build more rifles....

I'm torn...it's almost pointless for me to keep it as a barrel I no longer desire to have...i didn't plan to get into building guns...i definitely won't sell my FIRST build...so I aughta be smart and put a barrel on it that I want...

I wanted better results on deer...couldn't get a factory big bore...so the LRH barrel came about...to shoot bullets that'll do more...

Truth is shoving plastic sabots just feels wrong lol...even a copper conical...

I'd be fine with the lead Conicals...

I think the rifle is going to finish awesome...and like I said I might sell a gun in my life but it'll never be the first one I built..

From what I've read of your flintlock hunting and what you're looking for, if you can get to a bigger bore, I think you'll really smile.

I agree....

I couldn't BUY a big bore..and customs aren't usually cheap...

You know the story..i was under the assumption that TC parts drop in this stock....HA joke on me...send it back? Or learn to build?

I figured with the fast twist it'd shoot Conicals and sabots well. And they'll pick up the slack and do what I am looking for...

And...they will.

But in the end I want a big bore....

I think I'm gunna go to the big bore...

I can get a drop in barrel from Oregon barrel co.

Then I can do an aged finish on the barrel and furniture...

I shouldn't have a problem finding a buyer for a fast twist 1" TC drop in green mountain barrel...

I really think that's the way to go...

Oregon barrel comes upto 30".

Can get the twist and rifle g depth as desired...

Underlug, thimbles and everything is on it...breech already fitted...i have a white lightnin liner I can put in...all it'll need is sights and finished...

By the time the barrel is in I should have the stock and furniture finished lol...

I've used No Excuses for more than a decade in my White Rifles .451 and .504 inlines. Their bullets are sized to shoot well out of the Whites with an easy loading slip fit. Just push into the barrel with my finger and push down onto the powder with my rod. While easy loading, the conical won't move off the powder. I always foul my barrel and generally do not clean between shots. I use loose 777 powder, usually 65-75gr. I never shoot or hunt with a clean barrel. My .451 Thunderbolt shoots great out to 200 yards with their 460gr. Works fine on deer. I tried a box of 385gr but those were not long enough to shoot well.

Whites are fast twist but I have no idea how the rifling or bore diameter would compare to your Green Mtn barrel. You want the conicals sized to get that easy loading slip fit, not a pound it home tight or a loose fit. If you know what your bore diameter actually is cut to, No Excuses can size the bullets for you.

I h found with a 1:28 twist barrel that light conicals fly odd and tumble with full power loads. I love PA conicals but I only use them in 1:48 and slower twists. I like big heavy conicals in fast twist barrels. I use to use T/C 470 grain maxi-hunters but they are no where to be found now. They were devastating and very accurate out of a 1:28 barrel.

Thanx guys!

Octagon, seems lead Conicals are getting tough to find... Buffalo co is done...

Hornady makes the PA conical and the Great Plains...the 385 great plains gets some bad reviews... everyone seemed to love the heavier solid nose variety though...

Precision Rifle went to sabots only...they made a bunch of lead Conicals I wanted to try...

I decided to go 58cal for this build....

Called Oregon barrel company and they said 2 months give or take...no problem...wait wait wait...you want me to send you my stock? Too much hassle...expense...and risk..don't market a "drop in" barrel and then need the stock to fit it..1" flats are 1" flats...a 1" TC tang is a TC tang...

Soooo...I'm gun a continue the build and either try to no excuses or send it to be re-bored to 58cal...

In all honesty I think it'll be a 58cal when I'm done...i think it'll feel better with a little weight drilled out lol...

A 58cal round ball aughta hit with authority and spill some blood..

I will test the barrel as a 50 before sending it off...

I just drilled both my 50cal barrel touch holes out..will install the white lightnin liners when I et back home tonight...

Will have the nose piece ready to be poured and maybe pour it tomorrow... tomorrow my Vex bit will be in and I can finish installing the hardware..

Maybe Saturday shape the stock and Sunday start finishing!! I think my staining supplies will be in tomorrow or Saturday anyways...i have the finish already...

That'd be nice to get the wood stained and a coat of finish on...then I go back to work and every other day I can hit another coat..

Then my next days off I an finish the metal..might be able to get that done before then..i don't have much..trigger guard, buttplate and lock..all are pretty much ready to finish actually...i could be shooting on my next days off lol...

If I don't fish at all this weekend I know I could have it done...I'd like to fish though!
