Hello fellas, I'm new to the metal detecting scene, I picked up a decent machine because my daughter was showing interest in them and I figured it mite be a great way to keep her outdoors with me.

With that being said, I can't find much on rules and regulations in Pa for this hobby. Other than some rules reguarding state lands. We have a church nearby that has a band platform and some picnic tables, I would NEVER be interested in going anywhere near a grave yard. The tables and grandstand a 100 yds from the nearest grave stone, I figured this mite be a place she could find some spilt pocket change ect.

I have been told that most churches have "public access" but I want to teach my daughter to be right and legal with this hobby. What are you guys thoughts on this?

there is NO public access in PA for detecting, always always ask permission, did I mention always lol. Reason being, you are digging up their ground so technically you could get pinched for vandalism. I have asked and been denied at a few churches, permitted at many more, talk to the Pastor. Talk to landowners for houses and talk to township supervisors for parks etc.. Many states down south no longer allow detecting because of people assuming they can go on "public" land and do this. Luckily it hasn't come past SC yet so let's keep it that way

Please read the Rules of Etiquette at the beginning of this Forum . It will give you a good start for rules of conduct in our hobby . There are also tons of great books available from the dealers of most of the big name detector manufactures . Happy Hunting ....
