Off to a good start...

Mike Haywood held without bond

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- New Pitt coach Mike Haywood is jailed on a domestic violence charge after a struggle at his South Bend home.

Assistant St. Joseph County Police Chief Bill Redman says Haywood was arrested about 3 p.m. Friday after a custody issue developed with a woman with whom Haywood has a child. The unidentified woman told police that Haywood grabbed her by the arm and neck and pushed her as she tried to leave.

Redman says the woman had marks on her neck, arms and back.

Haywood will be held without bond in the St. Joseph County jail until he goes before a judge. Redman says that might occur over the weekend, but no later than Monday.

Pittsburgh hired Haywood on Dec. 16 to replace Dave Wannstedt, who resigned under pressure. Haywood led Miami (Ohio) to a 9-4 record this season and the Mid-American Conference championship.

Just think, one of the reasons they gave for canning Wannstedt was the arrests of the players. Why not get a jailbird to coach the team? This will end up being one of the biggest mistakes in the history of Pitt football.

Maybe the new coaches attitude towards player arrests is, if you cant beat em, join em!

Walt Harris is still the offensive coordinator at Cal U. Wasn't he the last coach to take the program to a BCS game?

I agree, but under no circumstances is it OK to crack one, short your life or the life of your kids being threatened.

Wannstedt would have been fine this year, but he lost the 2 biggest pieces of his defense, and started a rookie at QB. He never used either one of those things as an excuse, but it made a huge difference. I agree with his approach of run the ball and play good defense, it just doesn't work when you have your best players hurt on defense, and a inexperienced QB on offense. Teams stack 8-9 in the box to stop the run and put a lot of pressure on the QB. The plays were there to be made in the passing game, he just wasn't able to connect. Maybe next year, he'll be better, but that won't help Wannstedt now. I really think Pitt football will take a step back now. They are going to a totally different system, and don't have the players on offense to run the spread, nor is their defense set up to play the amount of time that the spread offense makes them play. More passing=less TOP, tired defense.

Yep---helps to have Larry Fitzgerald.
Even then, they went because they won a weak conference, certainly not because they were an elite team that deserved to be there. That season, they wouldn't have made a 16 team playoff.

Every College contract has a character clause in it to protect the univerities, HR needs to stick to its guns and fire this women beater asap, and take a good long look at the guy(petersen) that didnt do his homework that hired him.

Since they decided that the job of the new coach is to instill law and order, and make men of these boys, I recommend the following actions. Fire Haywood right away. And since he's already in town, hire this guy, who specializes in all things manly:

As an added bonus, a 2 second glare from Gary Roberts has been found to turn lesser men, ie everyone else, immediately to stone.

I don't think Pittsburgh will tolerate it if they keep him on board. He was a poor candidate to begin with. His actions now prove that.

Pittsburgh needs to acquire a known name that has a proven track record.

Come to think of it, isn't there already another womanizing jerk from Miami, Ohio taking up space in Pittsburgh? One is already too many. Don't need two of them.

That is not illegal. Hence, Ben wasn't charged with any wrongdoing. If you notice, the Georgia girl didn't sue him, either. 20 year olds shouldn't be drunk in a club at 3 AM advertising their willingness to play ball.

Beating a woman, however, is illegal, wrong, and inexcusable. James Harrison will tell you that too.

Lou Holtz would be great, but he's also close to dying of old age, and likely isn't wanting anything to do with 16 hour work days 7 days a week anymore.

Ben was wrong for what he did. Period. Legal or illegal, it doesn't matter. He's a jerk and it was wrong what he did. Ben getting the Rooney Award is a disgrace to the Rooney's. Art Senior is doing flip-flops in his grave as a result.

The ONLY reason I still watch Steeler football is to see Troy P. and James H. destroy the opposing offense.

Ben is a jerk! Should have been put in jail and had his day in front of judge. Any of us would of been. We don't know the whole truth it was covered up. Body guards off duty state police. What a surprise. All people should be treated same money or no money. World don't work that way. Rooney's tried to dump but no takers. Had to hire someone to teach him how to act. How old is he??
