Boy I agree on the 8x57.

The last couple times I went to Africa I didn't want to bother taking rifles with me so I just used whatever the PH had. More often than not he handed me his 8x57. It was a semi-sporterized Mauser 98 and was it ever accurate. I can't recall everything I shot with it, but it seemed to work on everything with authority and for a rifle with seemingly ho-hum ballistics, I made a couple pretty long shots with it. One was on a black wildebeest at well over 300 yards. I was definitely an 8mm Mauser fan after those couple trips.

Clearly one of the greatest big game cartridges ever the ..8 mm rem mag !! It will handle anything under any condition provided you can handle it, just goes to show you how moronic engineers can ruin an awesome cartridge for no reason other than their own incompetency ! Not far behind and for the same reason would be the .300 SAUM, another fine, super accurate hard hitting cartridge..

I think you could say that just about any caliber that's not a magnum people underrate these days. They go for that .30 mag instead of the 30-06 when that's really all you need.

I also think that a lot of the older out of production rounds that most people don't know about are underrated as well.

Let's see:

.32 Remington, .32 Win Special, .35 Remington, 30-40 Krag, 7x57, 8x57, .303 British, .303 savage, 32-20, and the .243 win to name a few.

Underrated in my opinion were:

32 win special - My Dads gun. Killed several deer and bear with this gun. When I used it in Canada the guide cringed when he saw what I was using. 1 shot 1 bear.
222 Remington - I have 3 and reload. A very, very accurate rifle.
