mentor question

2469 Views 14 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  R. S. B.
My little guy will turn 12 in the middle of rifle season, can he take the hunter safety course this fall, mentor hunt until his birthday, and then buy his own license for the remainder of the season? This means he would have a mentor license and regular license in the same year. Is that OK?

yes,i called the pgc to check,my son will also trun 12 in the middle of rifle season
However, if they kill a buck during the mentoring period, they are done buck hunting after they get a license.
the mentor license will void when he gets his junior license.
Make sure he <u>does not carry(on person) 2 licenses</u> at one time!!!
My grandson is also turning 12 during the first week of rifle. My son opted to have him take his safety course and bought his junior license already. This way he was able to get his doe tag. yes he will miss a little of the season ,but he'll still be out with dad until he's old enough. So, he observes the first week, and is allowed to hunt the second, and all thereafter.

He can get his mentor license and use that the first week!
Learned something here. You are allowed to buy a license before you are of age??

Are you being serious?
My grand son took his hunter ed last Saturday and got his regular Jr license on Sunday. He will start using it on the second day of bear season. His cc# is the same as his mentor number was last year.
I was really asking....not trying to be PITA.

Yes, you can take the hunter ed course and get your license when you're 11.....can't use the license until 12th birthday. Prior to that you can get a MY permit(any age under 12) with a buck tag, turkey tag and privileges to hunt groundhog and squirrel too.
Yes you can.. My son was 11 and passed the hunters ed course in July. He did not turn 12 until august 12. I went in July and bought him the junior license and also applied for anterless tags for him. I never knew you could do that until I asked the wco at the class. He just could not use the license until he turned 12.

I wasn't trying to be a smart alack. I was honestly asking if you were, indeed, asking a question. You didn't respond very quickly so I posted the following:

I think you are wrong here. I thought it was that if you bbought the junior license then he can't get a MY permit?

They can get their hunting license at the age of 11 provided they have already taken and passed the Hunter Education class. They need that license to send for an antlerless license even though they can’t use it until the day they turn 12 years old. They can also get a mentor permit to use until they turn 12.

Their hunting license is not valid until their 12th birthday, which is the same day their mentor permit becomes invalid. Therefore, the permit and license do not over lap.

The yearly limit for antlered deer is one per year so if they harvested one as a mentor the antlered tag on their regular license is invalid and harvesting a second buck in one season would be an illegal deer.
