Anyone hitting the stuff yet?My favorite all time summer(and winter)drink.
Saw at Black Creek Greenhouse in East Earl have about 15-18 varities.
I have 4 types.
It's a tea made from mint found in the meadow or home grown mint, you boil water or some say almost boil and add the leaves and stems and let it sit a while then strain out the mint and add ice or put it in the fridge. It freezes well also.
We are on our 2nd batch of tea. I planted a patch, the only problem is trying to keep it from spreading out of control. Also good for making Mojitos. My wife brings the tea up to a boil and then turns off the burner and lets it sit for a while. Your whole house will smell good. After it cools some, strain out the tea and the we sugar it to taste while still warm, the sugar disolves much better in hot water than cold. After it gets cold, put it in your containers and put in the fridge. It won't last long.
Find it? If you were close to me I'd give you some. It's gotten away from me. Everytime I mow that corner of the yard my eyes run like I've been pepper-sprayed!
I have been drinking it straight...no sugar.
I might try adding some maple sugar but I don't use refined sugar or any of the sweeteners like aspartame, Sucralose, or saccharin. The raw sugar doesn't mix well with water. Maybe stevia? Anybody have success with using it in meadow tea?
My wife makes a container just for her unsweetened and uses Stevia after she pours a glass. I tasted some, I is close to sugar and no aftertaste or pucker factor. You could try Agavesyrup, google it. I would worry about maple syrup imparting a flavor.
I have never measured the amount, just add some to the hot water, let it sit for 20 minutes and try a sip if it's not strong enough for your taste, add some more.
Was inspired by this thread, and decided to give it a try...delicious!!
I didn't measure, but by rough estimate, I used 2 cups (packed) spearmint for 2 quarts of water. The whole fam loved it, so I don't think a lot of adjustment is needed. I'd bet this tastes good with a shot or 2 of bourbon, similar to a mint julep?
Probably want a little soda water for the carbonation.
I have a big patch in a box that stays partially contained. I will be giving this a try this evening before we make a campfire. Kids can sip the regular and the wife and I will make up something special.
"Amish Water" Meadow Tea,Lancaster Amish sell it as a powder mix also.
