Several years ago, I saw a red fox with mange. It looked so miserable
Same here at home. Saw this fox off and on all winter. Can’t imagine how it survived. Rat tail no hair and patchy coat. Would see it in my yard in the sun come spring and summer sunning itself, curled up in a ball. Then it disappeared.

Have old pasture that I can see across a couple hundred yards away, have a 400yd target shooting lane thru it I bushhog. There was a flock of turkeys in the tall weeds and I saw this strange animal coming down the cut lane towards them, didn't know what it was so got the binos, then I recognized it as a red fox because the only hair on it was a tuft of white hair on the tip of the tail. Grabbed a shotgun and tried sneaking up on it near the turkeys, got close enough to take a turkey seeing their heads at the top of the weeds but then they spooked running away and never saw the fox. Realized my wind was wrong so no chance.
Other than that never came across it NE Susquehanna Co.

Maybe 6 but mild cases.

Oct '22...all these pups had it. The mature male did not....we did not kill the mature female(we believe she disappeared before the first kill as we counted them when we set up)
Theses pups were constantly scratching and biting themselves. It was difficult to double because of their body positioning constantly changed. Then they would "separate" and we'd loose site of 1....

It was one of the longest and tactically meticulous hunts..Our goal was to shoot the mature male and female first. We already had one pup at sub 100 yards scratching away and had to set out call....the male and female were working the cow pasture and the other pups were roaming around 350 yards away....rest is history.

I've seen mange come and go in my lifetime. When mange is here, it can be devastating. I've had years where 50%-60% of my kills & catches (trapping) had mange.
We see Reds & Coyote in different stages (as a mange category). I'm not sure if some canines only get a 'touch of mange' or all go to severe cases.
Personally, I haven't skun, fleshed & boarded a mangy canine. Even a mild case of mange on canine gives the overall fur 'a weak look'.
Here's a couple Fox I've know-
Rodent Grey squirrel Squirrel Fawn Grass

Carnivore Fox Dog breed Swift fox Fawn

Correct beagler, Grey Fox don't get mange.

Mange vs. Rubs
Some folks confuse mange with rubs or rubbing.
The term 'rubbed' is used by fur market graders to denote loss of guard hairs in shoulders, hips or sides.
'Rubbed' pelts are listed as damaged fur.

From my understanding, late season rubbed fur is caused by canines laying/sleeping on frozen ground or snow. Their body melts ground/snow under them. Ground/snow re-freezes around body as they sleep. When canine returns to it's feet, guard hairs are pulled out by re-frozen ground/snow. Rubbing can occur early or late in the season due to weather conditions.

Here's a 'rubbed' Coyote, at the shoulders-

To be honest it’s pretty rare around here.
We don’t have a massive sample group to test, but out of say 25 coyotes I see it on 1.

how is it in your area?
I’m not far from you, and like you, I seldom see any mange. I saw a red fox near Grove City a year ago that was almost hairless, and every fall, I see at least one bear on trail cams with some degree of mange.

Simmons had a big bear at his shop this year when I took mine to get mounted that had mange all over it and looked terrible. The customer still wanted to get it mounted.
