Having been stationed there for the majority of my service in the Air Force, I can tell you there are a few public access spots within about an hour of Knob Knoster/Whiteman. There is no hunting on the park just north of base. I took my first archery gobbler on one of those spots back in 1993. Just get on the MO DNR site and do a search of the public lands around, using Whiteman, AFB as your best/biggest landmark.
Check out the Mark Twain National Forest. It's big and so are the gobblers.
And is about 3 hours south of Knob Knoster. Go straight north on route 23 and you'll run right into the Leesville and Perry Wildlife mgmnt areas. I have taken birds on both spots. SP Boss def mentioned one of the BEST areas, if you're willing to travel a bit to hunt some HUGE MO gobblers though you will NOT be alone in those woods! Sometimes it seemed like there were more hunters than trees down there...not unlike SGLS around here...
Don't have much info about Knob Knoster, but I can tell you after 23 years of hunting in the Mark Twain. The Number of birds have declined over the past 10 years, and the hunters searching for birds has gone way up.
Thanks....I'm doing my homework !

Gotta find you some bordering private land to hunt if you want to hunt the MTNF! The last time we hunted it we were on the Ex's uncle's 900 acre farm and we had birds all over us for 4 days straight. We took some seriously heavy birds too. If you can get permission, private property around the edges of the MTNF is your best bet for a monster MO gobbler.
