This was my first full year of fly fishing and I'm having a blast with it. I am planning on doing some fishing the next couple of weekends. What are some good flies to be using this time of year. Dries, nymphs, etc......

all depends on your location and what for streams you will be fishing but if they have wild fish in them then eggs are great because of the spawning. I dont fish eggs, mainly use really small mayfly nymphs 18 and smaller with midges in the same size. Will also use some big stones and caddis larve, that will cover just about everything in the streams that i fish....if you are fishing a limestone or spring creek scuds are another good bet. For fishing on top midges and sometimes you will get some bwo's in the middle of the day. After the spawn and when the cold water starts they dont move or feed much and when they do they arent using alot of energy to eat. About the only thing they will move for will be a big streamer due to the big meal. Winter fishing came be really tuff but you can also hit some great days, just the die hards are normally on the stream so not a whole lot of pressure. They will also be in different water then they were in the spring/summer. Mostly slow moving water and sometimes in shallow water since it will warm up faster.

Good to see you're going to be getting out more Anthony. Being one of the diehards that fish all winter regardless of temps, I like running nymphs in sizes 6 through 14. Sometimes I'll even drop down to something as small as 16, but rarely need too. Just remember your desire will get you out there in the dead of winter but the right gear will keep you there, dress smartly...
