New to inline shooting, bought a CVA Optima.. Do I need to use some kind of special muzzleloading primer, or can I use the same 209 shotgun primer I use to reload my 12 gauge shells?

Either will work. Some may tell you that special muzzleloader ones burn cleaner, or hotter, or better. I've never noticed much of a difference.

I've always used Federal 209 shotgun primers. Mostly just because I have a gazillion of them from reloading trap loads. Have always worked fine for me.

Any 209 shotgun primer should do, but I prefer (and would suggest) using a magnum primer such as the CCI 209M. That makes it possible to use Blackhorn 209 powder (which requires a sharp pressure spike to get it going but, in my experience, has the highest accuracy potential of any inline muzzleloading powder on the market) or any other powder out there.
