EDGEFIELD, S.C. — Hunters with disabilities in Pennsylvania will have access to more hunting opportunities thanks to new, wheelchair-accessible shooting platforms in state forests and on game lands in Dauphin County.
The Lykens Valley Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation helped build two wheelchair-accesible shooting platforms in Pennsylvania's Weiser State Forest.
The platform sites are located along Luke's Trail, which comprises approximately 2.5 miles of roadway for exclusive use by hunters and outdoor enthusiasts with disabilities. The grant also will fund roadway improvements along the trail, giving users easier access to hunting locations.
Two wooden platforms already have been constructed in Weiser State Forest thanks to the efforts of the Lykens Valley Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and its project partners. A $6,000 matching grant awarded by the NWTF to the Lykens Valley Chapter ensures that two stone platforms will soon be built on nearby state game lands. The NWTF awarded the money through Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF to help make Pennsylvania's outdoor opportunities more accessible to outdoorsmen and women with disabilities.
"The NWTF, our volunteers, and partners have really stepped up to help outdoorsmen and women with disabilities around the country," said Illana Burkhart, Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF coordinator. "Kudos to the Lykens Valley Chapter for taking the lead on a project that will help more people enjoy Pennsylvania's wealth of wildlife resources."
Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF provides all people with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors through local chapter events nationwide. Whether it is shooting, hunting, fishing or archery, there is no limit to the outdoor opportunities Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF can bring to a person with disabilities eager to get outside and participate in an active lifestyle.
The platform sites are strategically placed in remote locations to ensure that users have an enjoyable experience. People using the ramped platforms will be able to hunt and observe white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, black bear, grouse and many other species of wildlife.
Project partners included TYCO Electronics, Wildlife Forever, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
