Going first muzzle load hunt this year . Using CVA Optima in line. Any special precautions for hunting in the rain? Will be hunting 3 days leave loaded but remove primer at night? Appreciate any advise.

A little bit of rain isn't going to hurt anything. I tend to be on the cautious side, so I would unload it daily and reload each morning if the rain was substantial. Probably unnecessary, but I don't want any issues if/when I get a good shot opportunity.

You will need to unload daily.....
I have no problem hunting in the rain with my inlines.
If it rains during flintlock....I stay home. I have tried multiple cow knees and other contraptions.....I stay home.

With my inline (TC Omega), I will still usually keep a sheet of Saran Wrap with me to cover the action in heavier rain just out of paranoia. Odds are, it would be fine without it, but I prefer not to test the theory.

I brought my flintlock out to Colorado for an elk hunt recently, and the erratic weather had me real nervous in even the slightest, spitting rain. I ended up switching up to my inline for the remainder of the hunt, and was much more at ease with each passing cloud.

I don't know a thing about inlines....


Rain and a flintlock always made me nervous....but I am learning to trust myself and my methods and quit making excuses and go hunt lol...


My 2nd spring gobbler tag was filled in the rain with a flintlock this season..


First tag I carried my 870 for the first time that morning because I was planning to run n gun in big woods and not go back to the truck..took the 870 because rain was supposed to come pretty early..it did sprinkle..but nothing major till I was half way back to the truck with my bird...after that I committed the 2nd tag to the flintlock...

Put a dab of bore butter on the action so the cap is sealed. I use a finger condom (finger cot) over my barrel.

Unload daily as others have stated

If I was using flint in damp conditions, I change pan charge often. Keep (wet naps) in your possible bag to wipe out moisture. It evaporates and gives a nice dry pan.

Piece of electricians tape over the muzzle, keep gun pointed slightly down. Keep lock area (if flint or percussion) covered with a cow's knee and hold under arm pit. If humid conditions, unload daily.
