I found that gem a year or two ago, I think that's the first a link was put up here.

"For years grouse hunters have insisted that field-trial grouse dogs are no better at finding birds than many ordinary pointers, setters, German shorthairs or Brittany spaniels which are used strictly as gun dogs in the fall.

"That is ridiculous," says Harry Townshend, a longtime grouse hunter and field-trialer from New Haven, Conn. who judged at this year's Grand National. "That's like trying to equate a saddle horse with a Thoroughbred. A good field-trial grouse dog is actually a hopped-up shooting dog that must do everything better. He must run a harder and more spectacular race, and exhibit more class, style and responsiveness to the handler. He must not be a mechanical dog—he does not simply swing back and forth through whatever cover happens to lie ahead of his handler. The dog moves directly to the likely grouse covers with a minimum of direction from the handler."

Not much has changed.

I'm not sure what you mean by "something we'll never see again". If it's the write up in Sports Illustrated, you may be correct. If it's the Grand National Grouse Championship being held in Marienville, well that should happen again in 2015.

The Grand National Grouse championship is a coverdog field trial to supposedly determine the best Ruffed Grouse hunting dog in the United States. There are those on this message board who know much more about it than I, but I believe this trial is held the first Tuesday of November and rotates between Michigan, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania every 3 years. I know it was held in Marienville in 2012, 2009 and 2006.

Though the trial is held by "hunting" wild birds, no birds are actually shot in the trial. A blank gun is used when the grouse is flushed.

Video from the 1995 GNGC at Marienville. Thunderstruck with a find that helped her take runner-up. The camera caught a glimpse of the bird after the flush.

To John S. and dap, I was referring to an article about grouse hunting appearing in SI. We'll be chasing ruffs in Hawaii with large caliber rifles before another one of those crops up.

I know about the annual RGS hunt. In fact, I was going to volunteer this year but ran into schedule trouble. I had heard of the Grand National before stumbling onto this article but I didn't know it was still going. It's interesting to hear that it'll be back around in a couple years. I might try to check that out.

LostAgain, thanks for the video. And Lyco, you're right, not much has changed. We're still arguing about our dogs and griping about too few birds!
