I use a version of it with fair results. I like straw chaff better than hay. I usually deploy these after we get snow. My traps are bedded with waxed dirt at these. Several of them get burned after set is made, to complete.

I notice the 'HAY SET' post is 10 years old.

Does anyone use this set?
How are your results?

Every year Trappers are asking whatever happened to that hay set thread.

So when the trapping season is upon us we dig it out of the archives and make it sticky for all to see.

Have a safe and successful season.

Straw is lit on fire. Set is made such that the straw around perimeter does not burn. Leaving the blending of straw over traps that are bedded in dirt or waxed dirt. Not the standard hay set. Sod is turned up on its side, dirt side out. Trap set out front of this. Lure placed to guide feet.

The burn is a great attractor. A couple of other type sets close should produce some of the shy ones. It is neat to watch the smoke trail and see where the scent is taken.

Be smart and be sure to have permission and fire is out before leaving. Get em!

Im with brookie. I dont bed my traps with a hay set either. They are fast and easy to put in and have great eye appeal in the snow. With that said u get WAY more non target catches than i would like so i dont use them that much any more. If its ylur first year just run dirt holes. Keep it simple but trust me u will have to put in lots and lots of sets to get fast and effective. Tbe most important thing i can tell u if this is your first year is bed ylur traps solid!!!!!! This is beginers biggest mastake. Good luck have fun and keep it simple.
