I've never had a decoy shot...but I rarely hunt with them..and when I do I feel confident I'm alone..

Nope, cause I never use one..should be illegal to use them ! Wait til someone gets shot doing this turkey reaping stuff and the PGC will ban all decoy use ..

Don't use them either, if they were ever banned, just think how much the kill rate would drop off? Could be a good thing but don't think you'll ever see decoys banned. But can see reaping banned, and depending how you look at it, that's already illegal here if you bide by the no stalking calling only regulation.

I never had a decoy shot, but I did have a logger run my avian X jake over with his truck.

Long and short of it. I harvested a very nice gobbler last Tuesday. The property is basically one big hill with a pipeline running through the center of it. I harvested the bird in the pipeline and I was standing on the woods edge trying to get my phone ready to have a 10 second timer for pictures. As I'm standing there I hear a truck coming up the pipeline. To my surprise it's a truck that I don't recognize. I started to become a little fearful because they are coming up the hill pretty fast and not slowing down. As they are driving closer to me the driver swerves and plows over my jake decoy. Naturally I go from 0-60 and my sharp tongue begins to sound off. Well, the truck stops and a logger (they're logging off the top of the hill I hunt) get out and begins to apologize saying he though t it was a real bird. Still, why in the world would you run over a real bird on purpose. Needless to say the guy is a idiot. I give him the riot act and threaten to call his logging company to explain the problem. As my decoy is still in exact shape before the collision I don't see the sense in it. He's probably lucky I shot the bird 10 mins prior to him coming up the hill. I probably would of gone ballistic if he would of came up 10 mins earlier before i shot the bird. There are just some unreal idiots out there.

I own a jake decoy that I used for one season and don't use anymore. I used it on private land at the time. I don't even take a hen decoy on public land. I don't feel comfortable using it, and honestly, the spots I've hunted, it's not like the turkeys can see miles and miles anyway. A lot of my setups, when he's in visual contact with where I'm calling, he's darn near in range (or may even be in range), so I just skip the decoys altogether.

I did have a hawk divebomb my hen once when I had it out in a field on private land. That was exciting. He realized it wasn't real about 3 feet before impact and did some fancy maneuvering to avoid actually hitting it. I think he shook it a bit with his wing tips as he climbed out of the dive and flew off, lol.

I was just curious if anyone has actually had a decoy shot...or legitimately very close to being shot...



I really doubt decoys kill too many turkeys that wouldn't be killed without them...

I use them on occasions but it's isolated.. When i do its usually an open field and I feel safe doing so...

I also typically setup like tdd does...i setup so a bird has is usually in range before he can "find the hen" and make them come looking for me..
