I love my 30-06 and so do my friends. In the 2 week season I'll have 10-15 guys come through, all but 2 shoot 30-06. Why is it when I say what I shoot so many guys here don't like them?

I think you answered your own question. So many people shoot a ,30-06 that some people just want to be different. The'06 is the standard by which other cartridges are judged and has been for a looooonnnnnngggg time. There is nothing in North America that the '06 will not do. It may not be OPTIMUM for everything, but it will do everything. Many people just don't like that because their cartridge of choice can't make that claim.

Bottom line is this, if you like and use the .30-06 and it works well for you, then WHO REALLY CARES WHAT ANYONE ELSE THINKS???

I've never owned an aught-six, but to hate it is down right un-American. And; anyone who says they hate the 30-06 probably isn't worth listening to anyway.

Absolute great Round to Handload for. Started My Youngest Son with an old Savage 110. I used the lowest Load for the 06 and He shot It well. Have gotten away from Reloading and now shot A .243. Both Kill Deer well....

Anyone who "hates" the .30-'06 needs to really find another cause.

The '06 is like a Toyota Camry. Not at all exciting. But does its job well and there are a gazillion of them out there.

That being said........... I don't own one (that's a lie....I have one in a Charles Daly Mauser action that I bought to one day turn into something interesting. Never shot it.). I have ZERO use for one (have a bunch of .308 Win's and assorted .300 Mag's) and will never buy another one unless it's a another donor for a project gun.

Now the .270..............

I hate .270's !!!

I know many prefer a particular round for their own particular reasons but never really heard someone say they hated the 06.
IMO one of the most versatile rounds for a variety of hunting.

I had one I hated. Not the caliber, but that dang gun. A Remington 760 Gamemaster. And the gun hated me..punished me every time I shot it. Just was not enjoyable to shoot and that is an understatement. But it's true I hated that gun.

That's something I can agree with. I've never had a reason to dislike a cartridge, but there have been a couple guns I've disliked (a Rem. 760 in .308 being one of them).

I had a buddy who hated the .30-06. Downright hated it. Said it wasn't powerful enough for PA deer hunting because he had to shoot a spike buck (legal at the time) twice with it to kill it. He also got a six point a few years earlier that he had to shoot 7 times to finish it off. That's right 7 times.

Pretty clear to me the '06 just isn't powerful enough for deer hunting...

i have alot of guns, but love my mod 70 3006 for deer. Fiberglass, ported, light weight, and shoots great out to 300 yards.

Closer range deer hunting i use my 444 marlin. Sweet gun.

Beyond hunting (shooting), i sure dont want a 06. Give me a 223, 22-250, 243.

Also had a 760 Carbine in 30-06. Most accurate Gun I`ve had. shot a bunch of Whitetails with It but, just couldn`t take the Kick anymore. Sent It down the Road but I wished I had It back.....

I had that to happen to me with a 760 308 back in the early 80's it might not of took 7 shots but pretty dang close it. First shot shot knocked it down than stood with in 10 yards shooting it the remainder of times. The deer would stand up and start walking away after every shot. My cousin down the road accused me of slaughtering the does. I kind of was embarrassed to say I was only trying to kill one deer. I sold the gun!. Back to the question, im not a 30 caliber fan I shoot 6mm's and 25's. However I do respect the 30-06 even though I will never own one it has taken more game in North America than any other caliber. Its been here for ever and will stay forever.

I was told decades ago by my uncle who hunted most of North America, only buy popular calibers. the 30.06 was at the top of the list.

It will take all North American big game and more importantly (then) you could walk into any hardware store and buy ammo.

All mostly true today as well except walking into any hardware store part.

Mine is a Springfield 1903 sporterized by my grandfather as his personal rifle. It is a Mark 1 rifle with a born on date of February 1924.

The new barrel I installed two years ago was a Mil Surp in original wrapping and cosmolin with a date of 6-44. 4 lands - I am a happy camper.

30-06 is the most versatile cartridge for North American hunting, period. I own several that were handed down to me and an m77 that I bought. I've shot around 10 deer with the '06 and it always worked excellent. That being said I probably haven't used one for deer hunting in 10 yrs because I prefer my 257 over the '06 for whitetail. But if I had to pick one rifle to do it all for any big game I could hunt in N.A. It would be an '06.

I have a Gamemaster in .30-06, that my grandpa gave me. I love the cartridge, it fits my needs perfectly. It has the steel butt plate and don't think it kicks as bad as you guys have been saying might just be me though. Like musky's model 70, it will be with me until the grave!

I have loved the .270 Winchester round for as long as I can remember and I am 45. I have owned one 30/06 and had to sell it at the time. I love both rounds. I want another 30/06 and will get one soon. Even though I gravitate to the .270 if I had to pick one and only one for the rest of my life it would be the 30/06 because of the versatility of the round. Thank God for choices. Many fine rounds out there and that makes shooting fun.

Nothing against it but I'll probably never own one. Maybe if it was so ridiculously cheap that I couldn't pass up a deal. I hunt with a muzzleloader most of the time. I have a.30-30 and a 6.5x55 for my centerfires plus a .223 I bought for my wife. The only way I'd probably buy something bigger was if I was going to do a western elk hunt. Even then, I'd go bigger than a .30-06 if I talked myself out of using a muzzleloader.
