I've hunted with my flintlock and had some success and lots of fun over the last 20 years but have never been very serious about ML's. Recently was invited to shoot some offhand roundball only grocery shoots. It is fun. I bought a H&A Underhammer cap gun in .36 from a friend. Not really shooting as well as I had hoped but I know I have a lot to learn and could be doing some very dumb things. I am shooting hornady .350 swaged balls with about .014 pillow ticking. Lubing the patch with a concoction of mutton tallow/castor oil I think my friend gave me and using around 28 grns. of Goex 3f. Any how my question is I need to use a plastic mallet with the short starter to get the ball in the first 4" or so of the bore even when clean. After that I can pretty much push it the rest of the way home with my rr. My friend says the muzzle is choked that way on purpose but my question is how likely is it I am hammering the soft ball out of round affecting accuracy when seating it this way? 25 yds. it shoots ok but from 50 yds. it is not good. I can't help but wonder if I am upsetting the ball to fit within the first 6" and it seats easily after that with the rr because it is distorted?? Any tips appreciated.
