For the bucks and be cause I believe in keeping it simple, the Garmin etrex10 is hard to beat.
A cautionary note, I use my Garmin a lot, but it does not take the place of a map and compass.

The e-trex units are very old technology, Look at the GPS 60 CSx or the newer 62. you get the size of an e-trex with map capabilities, the CD rom that comes with a copy garmin Map Source lets you download garmin topos off the web for free.
