I am a member of 2 different gun clubs. The closest one is mostly a trap shooting club and only has 2 shooting benches? On Monday i went there at 9 am and there were 6 guys waiting for benches to shoot from. So i headed to the other club. It is 15 miles further away. This is a rifle club with 14 benches and no one was there. Had the place all to myself. I don't like being at a crowded shooting range as it seems like you have to rush so some one else can shoot!
I had 4 guns to try to shoot. 2 30-06's,a 30-30 Marlin and a new 308.
The 2 30-06's didn't take any time as they were still shot in from last year and we had shot them a few time earlier! The Marlin i started at 50 yards as i had to load some shells for it and forgot what load it was using. The tag i had it written on had gotten lost? Then i found the load sheet i had for it and loaded up a box and had it with me. That darn gun surprised me! At 50 yards it was almost dead on,a little high but a very good 3 shot group? I tried it at 100 at it was dead on but a little low. I know from years of shooting that that was as good as it is going to get and just left it as it was!
NOW,that 308!!!!!! I have tried a bunch of different loads and bullets thru it and i swear that gun just hates me? I fired 2 rounds and looked thru my spotting scope and there were 2 in the bulls eye. I am ready to do the happy dance! YEA ! But the next round went left by about 4 inches, the next one low by the same and a couple more went else where.I done all the stuff you do and checked the rings for tightness and the action screws. Shot it again and just as bad as before. Thank heavens i was alone at the range !!!!!!!! People think Trump has a foul mouth ????? The darn squirrels all ran away!!!!!!!!
I gave up and packed up and headed home.

Have you checked for freefloat?

Sounds to me like you have stock touching the barrel. When the barrel heats, the place where it is touching acts like a heat sink keeping that part colder. Since heat expands metal, it will actually bend the bbl around that cold spot.

I'm just going to ask a stupid question, so bear with me.

Have you tried any factory ammo? I only ask because my 35 Whelen (Rem 700) doesn't like any bullets or powders in handloads. I tried everything this summer with 2 or 3 powders and 5 different bullets, but it groups pie plates at 100yrds. Drop a Federal Fusion in it and it'll drill the bull. I'm sure I just haven't found the sweet spot, but I got tired of getting hammered testing loads.

My Whelens like either IMR 4320 or Reloder 15 and the 225 Sierra. 59 grains of IMR 4320 and this bullet have been sub-MOA for me....

Well i got the 308 down to a 5 shot group you can cover with a Quarter thru a 9X scope at 100 yards. And this is not just one time it is consistently ! I shot 4 groups with it!
It was one of two things ? Gun didn't like the bullets i was using or the col. Tried the same c.o.l. on 2 different bullets and the Hornady 150s did what i was looking for .
I am going to load some more up today and go shooting on Sunday with my Grandson and my Son-in-law.

I have the same problem with my 06 and I still have not figured it out. Got lots of good suggestions from HPA mostly thinking the scope has failed, but I have not been to the range to check this out yet.

Free float it. I'd bet dollars to donuts that's the issue. Is it a Remington by chance?

I've never found a rifle that didn't improve after floating the barrel. Some say that pressure under the forearm is important....using cardboard or matchbook. I've found that's a bandaid for the problem.
