<span style="font-style: italic"> TOWANDA - The Bradford County commissioners on Thursday passed a $61.2 million county budget for 2013 which includes a 5.9 percent decrease in the county property tax rate.

The millions of dollars in annual revenue that the county has started to receive from the impact fee on gas drilling companies is allowing the county to reduce its property tax rate, county officials said.

"This is a terrific day in Bradford County," said Doug McLinko, chairman of the Bradford County commissioners.

The Bradford County commissioners on Thursday voted unanimously to eliminate the .65-mil portion of the county property tax bill that is used to pay debt service on bonds issued by the county, which amounts to a 5.9 percent reduction in the overall county property tax rate, said Bradford County Fiscal Director Joan Sanderson

Well, we have been paying them...this is just a little perk for the county residents... Not a huge tax savings for the individual but a rather significant source of income for the county..passed on in the way of some relief for the tax payer...

Lower energy costs, lower taxes.. and a place to take a hunt...Is this a great County or what???

Interesting debate, but the OP posted that the commissioners agreed to reduce the debt. Of course that's the right thing to do. Governments shouldn't be spending money they don't have. Yes, there are emergency situations that occcasionaly make it the wise thing to do, but there always seems to be an emergency. Many communities are showing property tax increases exceeding 20% and as high as 80%. For those commmunities in gas areas this is a great opportunity to clean up the balance sheet to reduce future debt service payments, and keep the balance sheeet clean. Match expenditures to revenue.
