I'm getting a Springer pup 4th of July weekend.
Haven't had a dog since we put our Brittany down two years ago.
First flushing breed for my wife and I, do you have any
recommended books or DVD's that I could get to help us with training.

First of all congratulations I think your wife and yourself have chosen wisely. He is a magnificent gun dog, well qualified as a leading contender for the title of best all around gun dog. Most Springers still posses enough hunting instincts to bring game to the bag, even the show line. Then there are the field bred dogs, and they are something special indeed! They fear no cover and retrieving comes as natural to them as it does to working Labs.
Honestly when it comes to books and DVD's they are all going to cover the same basic training and it's important for sure. I probably own a couple dozen books and tapes and take little things from each.
One of the best things you can do is get in touch with the ESS Field Trial Association and see if there is anyone close to you that you can train with.
A field bred Springer is so loaded with talent that an even not so well polished dog is going to bring home the bacon!
Imagine a poor Rooster trying to get away from one of these Rascals!

I always smile when I see Posts about Springer pups because I know the joy and memories that they bring!

Thanks for the input guys. These are field bred Springers,
getting the pup from a breeder in Wisconsin. I have the 6th
pick out of 7 pups. A friend of mine who lives out there has two from this breeder
and my brother-in-law also has one from him. They know how to find birds, I just want a little
knowledge on how to set them on the right path.

HUP by James Spencer. I've used the teachings from that book with 7 springer spaniels so far. Get yourself a couple Acme 210.5 spaniel whistles from Lion Country Supply. Spaniel guys don't like the gym class whistle the retriever guys use.
