Since its PA Farm Show time, I thought it would be a good time to post up a story and pics of a fox vest I had made about 20 years ago.

A friend of mine at the time was a very good seamstress. One time it came up in conversation and I mentioned I always wanted a red fox vest She said she would give it a try. She went to the library (pre-internet days) and got a book on sewing fur and the proper stitches to use.

In the meantime, I picked up a few boxes of the pre-mixed tanning powder and tanned some of my pelts. I had a tanned deer hide to use as the lining. I also used strips of that deer hide for button loops and rolled-up and glued strips for buttons. So, except for the sewing thread, the vest was a 100% Pennsylvania product……trapped, hunted, tanned, and stitched.

To shorten the story, I was very pleased as to how it looked when it was finished. Since she lived in Ephrata, and on a whim, I suggested we enter the vest in the Ephrata Fair. Lo and behold, we/she won a blue ribbon. She was grinning from ear to ear.

Now, we’re on a roll - I then suggested we enter it in the PA Farm Show. She was one happy lady when she also grabbed the blue ribbon at the “Big One”.

BTW………the vest required seven pelts.

Very nice!
I had a vest made for my wife out of part of last season's catch. 7 greys for the vest and 2 reds for the color..
All PA fur, made locally here by RK furs.. You get quite a discount when you bring in your own furs..

I no longer wear the vest as it’s showing it’s age and some wear and tear. But I wore it all the time for many years and it was very warm.

In addition to being warm – there was an added benefit - it was a “chic magnet”. All the women wanted to pet it………which, by the way, I thoroughly enjoyed.

But now unfortunately, at 60 y.o., I’m afraid it will take more than a fox vest to get the women to once again flock around me.

That’s a great suggestion, Banjo.

Apparently, Hai Karate is no longer made, but I noticed it’s still available on ebay. While googling it, I ran across this bit of trivia:

“Hai Karate was developed by Pfizer (Now more famous for Viagra).”

Sort of an amusing irony, huh?

Nice looking vests. If the Hai Karate works there may be a need for the Viagra!

Maybe that's why the same company made both...
