I have done both, bradford/susquehana county line, Buckwheat early, grind it in & planted brassica's & buck forage oats together, It did fair, but then again fair is the best I have had here! It was all eaten.

I have found forage oats and rape mix is a sure winner. But don't plant it until August.

Problem with buckwheat is that it dies at first frost so is a good spring/summer planting but not good for fall/winter. The deer by me won't touch oats until it is cold out.

So taking all that into account what you are saying could be a good mix - buckwheat for warm months, oats for cold but they will get really tall if you plant them now.

I plant it oats often, the deer keep it mowed but not till cold weathet.
It's more of an energy food any way, but in the summer it matures and make great bird habitat. And if you just till it under it will give you a free crop.
