Looking for a starter crossbow and I've been eyeing up the cheaper excalibur crossbows. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to the SMF (synthetic main frame)?

Can't go wrong with that bow, IMO. Many seasoned crossbow hunters shoot the synthetic barreled Excals. I think it actually helps to absorb vibration a bit on a generally loud crossbow type(recurve).

That bow will last you forever with virtually no maintenance.

My Dad has the axiom with the SMF and it is a really nice bow. They are definitely a great buy at their price.

They are lighter in weight. This is both an advantage and a disadvantage. Easy to carry and slightly more difficult to shoot offhand. For me personally, the lightweight is a good trade off. I just love the 175 lb. Excaliburs too.
