Pennsylvania sportsmen and women lost a great friend in conservation last evening - most specifically in wild turkey restoration, but across the board on all concerns - as Don Heckman has passed away after a months-long battle with severe health issues.

As a personal friend and associate of over 35 years, he will be sorely missed and I know many others here will also miss Don's company.

We all owe him a debt of gratitude for his many years of service to PA-NWTF and our outdoors community.

Sorry to hear this. I only met him once, but he struck me as a very good man.
Sad news. Few men or women are better friends of wild turkeys, or outdoor folk.

Steve.
RIP Sir.
Very sad news. The man has worked tirelessly for the wild turkey for as long as I can remember.
Very sad to hear this. A great ambassador for the wild turkey in Pennsylvania.
Sorry to hear this, prayers sent to his family.
To say this man worked tirelessly for wild turkey conservation is an understatement. He was still quite active in what he would call his retirement. My sincerest condolences to the family.
RIP Mr. Heckman and thank you for your efforts on behalf of the wild turkey and the hunters!
Never good to hear these things. I remember he posted here every now and again. Always mostly informative posts on birds, and positive things. Never remember seeing him engage in "banter". Rest in Peace.
He's one of the originals, he worked tirelessly for decades to expand the turkey flocks in this state...rip ole' timer !!
I met Don many years ago ago when a mutual friend asked me to take him turkey hunting on his southern NY property. We enjoyed a couple days together. A fine person and true ambassador for the wild turkey and PANWTF. My heartfelt condolences to his family.
Deepest condolences to his family. A tough loss for all PA sportsman
