Pop always told a story of Grandma buying a knife from a huckster on the Atlantic City Boardwalk in the late 30’s or early 40’s. I have a glass knife still in the box that Gma only used to cut ripe tomatos, still cuts paper thin slices after 80 years. They were strolling on the boardwalk one evening and a young tall deep voiced Irish fella was hawking this knife, never needs sharpening, never rusts etc etc.
I think it was .50 cents. Fast forward 20 some years and grandparents are watching this new game show called Who Do You Trust ? Hosted by Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon. Gma shouts “that’s the guy who sold me the glass knife” pointing to Ed. Seems he was doing this gig to fund his college tuition before the war. She never passed an opportunity to tell people she knew Ed. Especially once he was on the Tonite Show.

My daughter, a Penn State Alum was in France teaching English as a second language. Penn State was playing USC in the Rose bowl, so her and a friend found a bar that had it televised. The bar was packed but there was one booth that only had a couple sitting in it. So they went over and ask if they could share tje booth. They were stopped by a bodyguard, but the guy said it was ok. So they sat there and watched the game with this guy and his GF. It turned out the guy was Keifer Sutherland. My daughter does not watch much TV so she did not recognize him at first. And then they introduced each other. She said he was really nice, even though he was rooting for USC.

Well I have a few. I was sitting in a saloon back in the early 70's in WV about 11 am before a class having a large beer when a guy walks in and sits down next to me. He orders a jumbo beer also. We start BSing and he's telling me about all the places he's been. All at once he stops after two sips and said, "Hey is this 3.2 beer"? I said yea it's WV. He said I'm out of here you want this beer? Of course I said yes. That evening the school had a concert and it was Jim Croce. He was the guy I was sitting next to and mooched a free beer off of.

Sat next to Jack Palance on a turbo-prop flight out of Scranton. He signed the pics of my kids I had in my wallet.

When i was a kid we used to go to ponderosa park in ohio. They had all the big name country bands there every weekend and in between sets they had a window where the singers would come and sign autographs. One weekend dolly parton was there with porter wagoner and not having anything to get signed, dolly signed my hand. I was only 8 years old but i still remember her big..... smile.

Ponderosa Park, brings back memories for me....nothing "celebrity" but, still remember 7 or 8 years old, running around at the Country Jamboree. Still remember Charlie Daniel's Band and listening to Devil went down to Georgia.....always loved that song after that....

Not big time celeb but, Tunch Ilkin from the Steelers did fish on our boat during a Lake Erie Charity Walleye Classic fishing tourney out of Dunkirk, NY back in the early 90's. We only had a 25' hard top and kind of felt bad for him crammed in there with us but he had a great time...caught some nice walleye and an 11# beauty of brown trout that I think he ended up getting mounted. RIP Tunch...he was definitely down to earth and it was awesome cause we had my cousin from Cleveland with us, who was a HUGE Browns fan....

Saw Rick Flair a professional wrestler when he was in his prime at the airport and got a "What's up" when I said his name. He just kept moving on.

My wife stopped less than a foot short from running over Mike Tyson at the entrance to MGM in Vegas.

We were arriving at about 8AM and he and his lady companion clearly were ending their night out. At the loud screech of tires he startled, then just grinned. Then he and his lady friend continued to a waiting limo.

She was stacked to the hilt. And apparently you can have a Spandex, tiger-print body suit just sprayed on. Or possibly dipped.

Also, I was just at a picnic where Rocky Bleier was a guest. Here's what four Super Bowl rings look like on my wife's hand 😎

Back before the PGC headquarters had locks on all the doors leading to the interior of the building Ted Nugent came to a Commission meeting along with his entourage of miscreants. He was there to testify at a Commission meeting. Him and his followers were walking all over the building walking into offices without invitation liked they owned the place. Some people were impressed, I closed my office door.

Back when I was healthy and could play golf, I had the opportunity to play a round at Latrobe CC. So, our foursome was at the first tee (this was not a golf "event") when the Pro came up and ask us (actually he ask the member who was in our foursome) if Mr. Palmer and his guest could tee off before us.

Of course, it was a "Yes". (When the Pro left we joked a bit by saying "Who is this Palmer guy anyway??) Mr. Palmer and his young golfer came over and thanked each of us for letting them tee off first. (Like...who's gonna say no?) Arnie Palmer and his younger friend then teed off. They each hit two balls!! (Just a practice round). Once they cleared the hole for us to play we never caught up to them......ever.

However, on one hole I hit my drive to the left side of the fairway, and Arnie had hit his drive to the left on a hole that was parallel to our groups hole. So, I was about 25 yards away from Mr. Palmer. He was hitting one way and me the other. I began to take my stance over the ball, but out of the corner of my eye I could see Mr. Palmer....and he wasn't lining up on his shot yet. He was paying NO attention to me at all.

But I became so nervous that I stepped back from my shot, watched him hit his ball....and walk away before I took my shot. I figured with Arnie right there.....on HIS COURSE....I'd shank the ball and for sure hit him. That's all I kept thinking about!! (No one wants that kind of "15 minutes of fame!! I could see the press.....Arnie Palmer damaged his ankle from a lousy shank-a-ponumus who's ball struck him like lightning!)

I hit the ball......and was about 10-15 yards short of the hole. Wrong club.

Not much of a story.....but it's mine and I'll keep it. But I will never forget how generous he was when he shook all of our hands and thanked us for letting them tee off first. He was a true class act.

With some "celebrities" they believe their fame leads to special privilege. For me....that leads to a very negative impression.

I was in Monroeville Mall (when it was safe) about 30 years ago. I was sitting on a bench, as usual, waiting for my wife. My 5 year old daughter was sitting next to me with her bald headed baby doll. Guy sits next to us and my daughter tries to say, "Mr Rogers". I look over and he's sitting right next to us. I asked him if he would sigh the dolls bald rubber head for her and he said. "I don't have time". What a bum.

Quite a few years back my buddy and I hit a local diner for breakfast. As we were at the register paying there was a couple seated at a nearby table. He was looking over at us an saying something to his wife/girlfriend. Being half deaf I couldn't hear what was said but my buddy did - Turned out "he" had recognized me from several apperances I had done on a local cable outdoor show and was pointing me out to his wife/GF..... my buddy wouldn't let me go back to sign his napkin... LOL

Oh....I forgot about this one......Maybe 20 years ago we with another family would rent an ocean front house north of OC MD.

Well, the guy (and his family of maybe 15) who rented the house next to us (houses were like 10-15 yards apart) was the guy who played Joey on Friends.

He was there with his GF, Mom etc. He was a pure horse's arse. We never attempted to even say hello to him as about the second day in, two young girls spotted him and wanted his autograph. He was such an arse to these two young girls it was incredible.

I've never watched a show he was in before.....or after that vacation. (Like that mattered)

Ran into Heimo Korth (Last Alaskan's TV show on the History channel) at the Fort Yukon airport in Ak. I was organizing gear while waiting for my plane to fly back to Fairbanks after my sheep hunt. He drove in an old beat up pickup but was very friendly. Was a nice addition to a great trip.

Mom and dad met Larry Holmes at his restaurant he owned in Easton. She also met Carrol Channing , Emma Jean Coco , Forster Brooks , Hugh O` brian, George Jones , Tammy Wynnett, Kenny Rogers . She also saw Sid Cesar , she said he was foul mouth and very rude to the staff where she worked and where she saw him. She wasn`t impressed by Don Rickles either also foul mouthed during his routine in Atlantic City casino. Most of the celebrities mom met were pleasant and polite. She met most of them thru her work at the University where use to work. Cid Cesar was escorted off campus for his bad behavior and insulting one of the top donors son who was working there at the time and his dad was in the audience at the time.
