Hooray!

Finally here!!!!! First day of Flintlock here's those heading out please be safe, keep your powder dry, and your aim be true!

Eating my bowl of oatmeal and taking a walk to a nice ladder stand overlooking a bedding area with 2 trails cut into it.

Seen lots of deer near it but saved the area for Flintlock!

Good luck all!!

Just parked my truck....3 hunters and a sick "dog" back at camp....Noone got up...

They did the same thing 2 years ago...When they left camp they sent me a big herd...

Still have snow in the woods and it's not walking friendly...

Light mist falling....I've fired in worse...

Been to Walmart..........Got the stamp I shoulda bought back in June.

Sitting in the truck listening to the rain beating on the roof. Radar shows it's gonna end........But probably not before first light. May be a good morning for eggs, sausage and taters at the country restaurant.........

7:32 am.....at home by warm stove with my beagle......not the least bit ashamed to admit the deer won again this year. Saving wear and tear on this old carcass in hopes it will carry me into next firearm season without much more aches and pains. I like to think of my attitude as "older but wiser".

Sat for an hour...Tracks all over but nothing looked real fresh. Moved a couple hundred yards to watch a strip of woods between 2 pine stands. More snow and doesn't look like much for tracks. Gunna give it a little while and move on.

Don't know if they left camp yet...

Snow is too loud to sneak around...Quad trails are mostly bare so that's how I'm getting around mostly

Light rain here in 5A/4B border area. Was ready to go early, weather forecast not promising this morning.

'Sposed to taper off in the afternoon. Rain again later this week. Bah!

Never got out at all last year for flinter season. Only two decent days the first week, I was working on a water line for our new gun club building. Everything was in the truck, in case I got the chance to hunt our club grounds. Never even loaded the rifle.

At my age, spending time in the rain with a flintlock is no longer all that appealing. Grumbles over, see what happens the rest of the season? Best wishes to all.

Love your post,m makes me feel a little at ease.
Off from work today and the plan was to get out at some point today.
Getting some house chores done and feeling a little raggid from the Holiday schedule.
So it looks like I'll be Chilling out this afternoon beibg a little lazzy and dreaming about being in my stand.
Got 4 more Saturdays to hunt here in 5D and fill the 1 tag left.

still a lot of snow here. really windy! saw a group about 1/4 mile across the farm heading out of the standing corn. there are 3 standing corn fields, so will have to pick the right spot at the right one for the afternoon/evening hunt. time for lunch!

I have family obligations as my side is having Christmas dinner today. Man, it is warm out there in SW Pa. Partly sunny and 60 degrees right now. Hoping to see some success pictures this evening when I check back in. Good luck to all that are out there.

Came in for some lunch. Saw 7 does this am moving through the thicket above me. Got the rifle in the rack in my garage nice and cool in there.

Got a friend coming over at 2 pm we're gonna split up and cover both field edges, got decent wind and a ton of winter wheat in the field.

Cold and overcast here says 34* but so damp and still wet makes it feel like single digits!

We're close to the stands so 150 yd walk isn't bad!

Nasty head cold....really nasty....fever all night, so between that and the rain, I sat out the day today. Hoping tomorrow is a better day. I have obligations in the morning, but should be able to get out for the afternoon, if the wind isn't too bad.

I had things that needed done in the morning and didn't head out until noonish. Spent the afternoon still hunting through some areas where we'll be putting on some drives during the next couple days - maybe.
Drove a dozen miles through gamelands and saw two vehicles parked.
Jumped two groups of deer, both 2/3 deer, didn't have any shooting ops and couldn't get a god look.

Season is early and I'm feeling confident..

5 of the 6 blinds were occupied today. We got in em just as the drizzle and wind started up. Still a decent amount of snow up here today. One flathead down around 8:00. One miss at 8:45. Four of the five blinds deer were seen. Nobody went out for the afternoon. Productive day.

Went out this evening for a nice sit in my stand. I didn't see any deer but some punks with no mufflers on their dirt bikes flew past my stand at least 4 times. So much for relaxing.

Hunting in 2f Jefferson county.

They left camp but went the other way to do a small drive. I came down to sit in and knew I should have took my time and didnt. Sent a good group down the hollow.

Made it to my spot and 2 doe came running in but not the way I was setup for.

Buddy shot at a small legal buck...It ran to me and stopped but I couldn't get a shot through a downed tree. He took off with a few other deer after a bit..

We continued on...I had a group of 5 run to me as I was pushing...I saw one had small antlers...They stopped 40yds away in the only patch of fog. I couldn't be sure what was a buck or mature doe...

Another push I was sitting and saw a group of doe and a small buck.. Guessing it was the same group my buddy shot at. They stopped just barely in view and opted to go up the hill not to me...

Went back out the last hour myself and had a group of 8 spot me. I had shots but it was a bit far and a little fog..I couldn't be sure what I was looking at and my binocs were fogged up bad...I thought I saw a good rack on one...

They left so I snuck after them.

I lost them but walked within 20yds of a doe standing near a tree top...Cracked back the hammer and another stood up...I knew the road and possibly a house was behind her and shooting through a timbered strip I wasn't taking that risk...

Worked back around and spotted a lone deer feeding. Same story...Foggy and fogged binocs...It didn't have antlers...I started touching the trigger and decided to pass. I'm not desperate and didn't wanna shoot a button buck.

All in all I saw somewhere around 30 deer. A couple buck for sure.

Back at it tomorrow.

No rain in 5C this morning so my son and I went out. Saw three doe. They were at the far end of the field and offered no shots. We hunted until about 9:30. Went out by myself around 2:30, sat in the same stand until dark. Around 4:50 I heard a snort off to my left up the steep embankment. I looked up through the trees and saw a tall spike skylined on the top of the hill. Then I saw two yearlings halfway down the hill, and another 4 doe further up the hill and more to my left. Within ten minutes I had 6 of those deer 30 feet in front of me as they slowly walked downhill past my stand. They scented me but didn't know what I was, as I had some brush breaking up my outline(I was in full camo). They stopped and just stared in my direction. I ever so slowly inched the gun up until I got it pointed at the largest of the doe, but by then I couldn't even see my sights, as it was getting pretty dark. It was real close to quitting time so I decided not to chance a shot. I just sat there and watched them slowly walk away. I waited about 5 minutes or so as to not spook them, then crept out and walked back to my truck. I'll be out later in the week. One of them will fall before the season is over.

hunted all day and got a few nice buck up on some small 3 man drives, but no shootin. The evening hunt was spent behind the house by myself, saw a nice doe and had her at about 40 yards, but could not touch the gun off as she had two small yearlings with her. Ive never experienced anything like that feeling before, but not shooting just felt like the right thing to do at that exact moment in time. Hope i can fill the freezer this year before my first child joins the world within the next week or two!
