LANDMARK CWD RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY

A CWD positive captive herd in Pennsylvania has become the first CWD positive herd in the country to have live samples taken for research purposes. Nic Haley, a Kansas State University (KSU) researcher commissioned by the North American Deer Farmers Association (NADeFA), in cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA), and Pennsylvania Deer Farmers Association (PDFA) collaborated to achieve a landmark stepping stone for CWD research. 22 states and 2 providences have confirmed the existence CWD positive animals. Yet, this Pennsylvania herd is the first to have "live" animals sampled for the research and development of diagnostic methods and management protocols.

Shawn Schafer, Executive Director of NADeFA, and Glenn Dice. Jr., Vice President of the PDFA, were instrumental in developing the framework for this first time event. Dice shared "I am very encouraged by the vision of all involved parties to step to the plate and commit to being part of a disease management solution." Schafer added "this has established a precedent for all States to pursue CWD disease research initiatives in cooperation with cervidae stakeholder groups." Schafer and Dice, along with the herd owner, would like to thank all parties involved including Wildlife Pharmaceuticals-ZooPharm, Pneu-dart, USDA, PDA, NADeFA, PADFA.

Detailed results will be available when they are confirmed with traditional test methods upon depopulation of the affected herd. As with all research, it takes large numbers to be statistically relevant. Schafer concluded "Hopefully we will be able to gather additional samples before or during pending depopulations, to allow the validation of this technology, which in turn could put an end to this wasteful cycle."

None of it means squat if Ag doesn't take action when a case is discovered. So far they have not only dropped the ball, they tripped and fell over it.

(NADeFA) North American Deer Farmers Association exists to:

* establish, encourage and facilitate an exchange of ideas on breeding, handling and deer farm management among members
* promote deer farming and ranching and venison consumption in North America
* to acquire and distribute information on all aspects of deer farming and ranching to members
* provide a forum for the solution of deer farming and ranching challenges and to keep members informed regarding the implementation of such solutions
* represent the deer farming and ranching industry to all levels of government, to livestock producers and to other related organizations
* provide a registry for privately-owned cervidae
* establish and promote ethical standards of conduct and husbandry in deer farming and ranching
* establish, promote and actively market standards for deer and deer products

Just so everyone knows who the press release comes from.

The research is great and I do truly hope they are successful.

As for the PA Dept. Ag (PDA) giving the go ahead and support, sure they would. The boys in the clubhouse need the support.

Meanwhile as the lead state agency in the CED response is mostly absent from anything remotely close to being the lead agency including communication with anyone other than those in the clubhouse. The citizen at large and hunters in particular are not part of their concern. This they continue to demonstrate.

No updates to new positives.

No press releases on regulations, quarantines, new cases found, disease management on the farms, and or for hunters, and more.

Absent and silent. Even when there are public meetings on CWD, those from PDA seem to sit silently while the GC staff holds the meeting.

ICare - can you confirm that the current policy for deer transfers within the borders of PA, from PA farm to PA farm is unfettered with the exception of quarantined farms?
