Well i've been wanting to buy some remington copper plated lead shot... but do i need a different barrel? just asking since i know you need a steel rated barrel for shooting steel shot, does the same play for copper plated?
No, the copper is not harder than the steel of the barrel, and is protected by the wad. You can shoot copper-plated shot through any barrel safe for modern smokeless powder loads.
Shot is plated with copper because it is harder than lead and helps prevent deformation when the shot goes through the choke. It is nowhere as hard as steel shot and it will not hurt your barrel. Copper plate has been around for a long time and used to be a favorite of waterfowl hunters before lead became illegal to use.
