While on stand this evening I heard running coming up through the woods. It's a yearling and it passes behind my stand. It is followed closely by an adult doe. She turns onto the trail that runs next to my stand.
I had already decided to take a doe today if I had the chance so at twenty yards I whistle to stop her and take aim.
Just as I'm ready to shoot I hear more running and a really nice, heavy beam, out past the ears, eight-point stops ten feet behind her. I line up the sights on him and just as I'm getting ready to let fly, she takes off and he leaps after her. They disappear and I'm left sitting there with a hammering heart and trembling hands.
The whole incident took less than ten seconds but WOW, was it ever exciting!
