Perhaps the "answer" is, that methane infiltration actually existed in many water wells, prior to any recent drilling activity.

But that doesn't fit well with conspiracy theories or pre-conceived notions?

Methane (other than the explosion risk) is not really dangerous in drinking water. What scares the heck out of me is the approximately 50,000 gallons of chemicals being used during the hydro fracking process per well.
