Buttons?

1173 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  zhuntman
Hey everyone, still pretty new to mushroom hunting, and don't try anything past sulfur shelf and sheepheads. A buddy's grandfather always talks about finding/eating "buttons", and as such I've eaten them too I suppose in his stews, etc. He is an old school outdoorsman and could care less about actual names, classifications, etc.

My question is...What exactly are "buttons"? Any info would be great.

Thanks!
Joe

I also know someone who eats "buttons." I'll ask the guy I know who gathers them what exactly they are. In the meantime...Here's a helpful link to some pennsylvania mushroom info.

My uncle and many in the area I live refer to young Honey Mushrooms as buttons.
Thanks zhuntman, I'll look into them. What part or OH are you from? He finds them in western PA/eastern OH I believe.
In northern PA. we call the Honey mushrooms Stumpies, which will soon be in season.

I live in Niles, Ohio by Warren but I pick mushrooms in Mercer County Pa with my Uncle. We also call Honey mushrooms stumpies but we call the young ones buttons. I don't really care to eat them but many people really like them.
