My family is going to build a new home. I am going to be the general contractor. The missing link at this time is an architect.
Has anyone worked with an architect they can recommend? -SL

Just curious, why do you feel you need a architect? I have nothing against them but just about every floor plan you see in a magazine, book etc. has engineered working dwgs for a fraction of what a architect will charge you.

We are in a unique situation where the property lot is a challenge.

I've worked with a guy in Gibsonia, north of Pittsburgh. His name is Larry Stephens of RLS Associates Architects. (724) 933-0424. He is hand's down the best architect I've ever worked with for residential projects. Tell him that Randy from Capstone Structural referred you. If you've got a challenging site, you may also need a structural engineer (I'd be happy to consult with you) You may also need a geotechnical engineer. Using an architect is an excellent idea. They can tailor your design/drawing/site to fit your budget and can save you more than their fees in extras, over runs, advise codes, detect future problems with maintenance even if you are an experienced general contractor. If you are borrowing funds from a bank...often they have requirements to quality as a general. Do you have any experience at being a general contractor?? Many have miss judged the amount of work and expertise required particularity when they themselves plan to personally do a lot of the labor. Purchasing material timely and economically, selecting qualified subs, bidding work, writing contracts, reviewing insurance, scheduling subs, paying subcontractors and material suppliers, assuring material deliveries and sub schedules in and out to keep an even flow to the project and finishing on time. If you have all that cover as a general you have a great start. It does not hurt to interview a few architects for their experience in your type of residential home. Find out who will actually be handling the architectural duties of your project, their duties/responsibilities/fees etc. Will they be involve in the project in addition to the design drawings...with inspections? My best advise is have a contract for every sub contractor and obtain proof of insurance for all workers that will be on your property before the contracts are signed. One uninsured accident can cause major impact on you project. Good luck and have fun with your dream project.
