Hey Guest, it looks like you haven't made your first post yet. Until you make an introduction thread, the rest of the site is locked to posting. Why not take a few minutes to say hi!
I always put up the game camera after the season to see what made it through. I already have photos of six bucks that either dropped one or both antlers. It seems a little early to me... What have you guys seen out there?
A lot of bucks shed during January and even a fair number will be shed in December. I saw one that was a shed buck on the last Thursday of flintlock season, which would have been the 10th of January. My youngest son and I have both killed shed antler bucks during previous flintlock seasons. Back when I was still working it wasn’t all that uncommon to check a hunter harvested antlerless deer that had shed its antlers before the end of the gun season.
Some will keep them until April but others will shed them as early as early December and if the snow gets deep in November I have even seen some shed before early December.
In my area 2G Jones Township our bucks are very very early this year i got a bunch missing one side and both also. found 2 sheds already 2 weeks ago. Now last year and the past 4 or 5 years i seldom see one dropped before march. I have some i see and got on cam that hold till almost april. but this year is way way different. I was shocked to check all my cams and see all the missing racks and half racks this early. Every area is different but my area its definatly very early this year.
Out of the 10 bucks my brother had on trail camera all had dropped one side if not both, with still a week remaining in the late flintlock season. I would say now is about normal for them to be dropping now.
Got a picture of a buck with one antler off the week after hunting season. The last two weeks I have gotten a buck with both antlers off 3 times but could be the same deer...gotten a 8 pointer on the camera as well that didn't drop yet.
I dropped off a buck I today at the butcher shop here in 5C. Of the 8 other deer he had there, two shed both sides, two were half racks and flour were does.
RSB - I'm well aware that some bucks drop antlers in December and mid-to late January. But for my area of WMU 2-B this 'is' early. In fact, I've seen a number of bucks each year - because of the good food sources and habitat here - hold their antlers into April. They sometimes drop them when the new set is pushing up. Years ago, we were license to raise and sell deer, and the bucks on the good feeds we fed them always held their antlers well into April.
