If you were out there today and missed (just hypothetical, never happen with this bunch), and you go to butter up a patch for a reload. Ain't happening cause you have a solid block of yellow. That stuff really gets hard.

Other than just staying home on cold days and recliner hunting on HPA, how do you avoid this? Next year, I'm keeping a mini tube in my pants pocket I think. Would be nice to have a flat container like a small snuff can that wouldn't leak. Any ideas?

Probably 30 years ago I mail ordered a drill bit to make a 54 cal loading block and never did it. Not sure I can even find the bit now!

You can use an empty shoe polish can, heat up some bore butter, or olive oil and bees wax, and pour it into the shoe polish container. Then, even when the stuff gets hard you can wipe a patch against it (just like shoe polish), and it will fit neatly in your possibles bag.

I quit using bore butter a long time ago in favor of pillow ticking pre-treated with ballistol.

Ditch the bore butter and use a lube that doesn't freeze so bad.


I'm liking TOTW mink oil. Doesn't stiffen up horrible and doesn't turn into a sloppy mess in the summer.

Thanks to auction black powder box lots, I have enough to last me several lifetimes. Might as well use it. And as much as it is criticized, I actually like it.
