For an area that size I would just use a hand sprayer to kill the weeds that are there now. Go to your local Agway and tell them what you want to do and they will recommend a product for you. I never used Post but that may be what you need. You want your clover to get high enough to go to seed; if you have turnups in your seed mix the deer will dig the roots up real bad.

You might consider doing small patches or strips of clover; then brassica; then chickory etc. and observe what the deer in your area prefer and the time of year they use it. Brassica is really good for the late fall and early winter here in PA. Once the frost gets it the deer really hammer it. Google QDMA (Quality deer management association) for a good forum on plots and such. It's a little work doing it but it's worth it for a small plot to hunt over.

When I did my plots I had a tractor and a disc to get it down to dirt; then I just used a hand spreader to cast the seed. The plot lasted about 6 years. You could use a weed wacker to maintain a small plot if you were up for a couple hours of work a couple of times of year. Use the hand sprayer to spot spray weeds throughout the year and you could have a nice little plot.

I just hit a corner in my backyard with round up today. I used a hand pump sprayer and made about 8 gallons from concentrate. Hopefully it was enough. The area is about 4700 sq ft. After the grass kills I plan on digging up some rocks and cleaning the area up a bit. Ill post some pics in a bit.

If there is decent soil there you shouldnt need to haul in topsoil. If its dead already get it tore up and follow the directions someone gave you on here about tearing it up and spraying again. You will be fine for this fall.

I went down to work on the plot today. I just had to move some of the bigger rocks for now. I was surprised to see that some clover was shooting up. I didnt plant this, it just appeared. Its from my lawn I assume. Its good to see I can grow it without even trying. I moved the rocks and turned the dirt a little by hand. The soil is looking good. Weeds came in a little. Ill spot spray later this month to get rid of them.
