I took some pictures of some arborvitaes that have something wrong with them. I have about 8 or so with this same problem. It shows signs of dieing off and the when I looked close it looks like the bark is pealing back. Do any of you folks know what is causing this and what I can do to fix it and prevent it in the future?

I did some more research and believe it may be what they call a canker. apparently usually after an injury some kind of fungus gets in and does this.

Most of the cankers are directly under the intersection of a limb with the trunk. I wonder if that huge 30" snow storm we had last winter could have caused the damage and then the fungus got to it.
