Gary,

I like having the picture on it due to the fact you can use it for I.D. since it is state issued.

I believe the intial fee is non-refundable but not quite sure.

I'm going to apply for my ltcf. Is it better to have the license with your picture on it and why? Is the fee refundable if you get rejected?
Do you feel you will be rejected: Pa is a shall issue state,the state has 45 days to issue your LTCF or explain to you why you were rejected. As stated the photo on your LTCF could be used as ID card. I am on my 4th renewal & no photo on mine however I understand my next renewal will require a photo.

I don't think I will be rejected. I just don't like to spend money and not get anything for it.
One more question where it says on application reason for LTCF if you only pick hunting and fishing is that all you can use it for?

Gary, Get it with your pic on it, Saves a little bs should you have to "show" it. As far as "reason",I put "personal protection" and have for the past 4 issues. And on most occasions I have carried it on the boat fishing and bow hunting. I'm sure an Pa L.E.O. could give you a better explanation...could call the Sheriff's office also.

I had a Sportsman license years ago not I have a LTCF.With the Sportsmans license there was no back ground check and no picture.$5 out the door.LTCF they do a back ground check and it is $25 for the license if approved.There is no application fee.The law limits the cost at $25.If they charge you more they are breaking the law.Things may have changed with the Sportsmans license but I doubt it.I suggest getting the LTCF.You are then covered in almost any situation.This is the list of things for which you could be denied a LTCF.I also list personal protection as my reason to carry,if you list hunting or fishing you better be doing that while in possesion. By law, the Sheriff must deny a license to any applicant who falls into one of the following categories:

an individual whose character and reputation is such that the individual would be likely to act in a manner dangerous to public safety;
an individual who has been convicted of an offense under the Controlled Substance, Drug, Device, and Cosmetic Act;
an individual convicted of a crime of violence;
an individual who, within the past ten years, has been adjudicated delinquent for a crime of violence or for an offense under the Controlled Substance, Drug, Device and Cosmetic Act;
an individual who is not of sound mind or who has ever been committed to a mental institution;
an individual who is addicted to or is an unlawful user of marijuana or a stimulant, depressant or narcotic drug;
an individual who is a habitual drunkard;
an individual who is charged with or has been convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year;
a resident of another state who does not possess a current license issued by the state;
an illegal alien;
an individual who has been discharged from the armed forces of the United States under dishonorable conditions, and;
an individual who is a fugitive from justice.
Once an application for a license to carry a firearm has been filed, the Sheriff's Office has 45 days in which to complete a background investigation and notify the applicant as to whether a license will be issued. Once issued, the license is valid for a period of five years.

The Sheriff's Office Firearms License Unit gives its highest priority to processing the applications to purchase firearms. The reason for this is our commitment to help ensure that no firearms are sold to any person who is not by law entitled to own one.

Our next priority is to process the applications of those who wish to carry a firearm. In addition to having the authority to issue licenses, the Sheriff also has the authority to revoke a license for good cause. For example, if an individual who possesses a current license to carry a firearm was convicted of a crime of violence, the Sheriff would revoke his license.

All of my LTCFs have been picture ID ones, not a choice here and they're also laminated. Doesn't matter whatcha put on the application, because they've all been marked as being for self defense.

While I had some minor "issues" with our former sheriff, these weren't among them. Got a new boy in office now, so don't know how he'll handle "his" LTCFs?

I posted what the website said.I am not involved in the county sheriff system.I know parking was 13 bucks for the hour I was there.Walking from the lot,waiting then walking back to the lot.Drive in Pittsburgh and try to figure it out if you don't work there.I'm about 1 1/2 miles inside the Allegheny line and wish it were Butler or Armstrong.

It doesnt matter what you choose to check off, it will cover everything. Most choose "other" and write in Personal Protection or something along those lines.

I got the picture ID one so if I do get checked I don't have to pull out my driver's license or anything for them to know I am the name on the permit and it can be used as an ID, also I check multiple boxes, self defense, hunting, collecting, everything except employment, so I will be covered whatever I'm doing, here in Mercer county it's a pretty painless process.

There is no "need to be covered for everything". The PA LTCF allows you to carry concealed, on or about your person or in a vehicle. There are no sub-sections for hunting, shooting, etc.

I have no reason why there are selection boxes, I can only guess its for some kind of statistics.

Whenever the government asks me a question like that I always think about the legal/constitutional reason(s) I can reply in the event of a change in law/court ruling.

For instance, my homeschooling affidavit clearly states that we are doing so for a religious reasons (1st Amendment challenge)

In this instance, I agree with the above answer which will afford the greatest constitutional challenge - 'protection' in my opinion.

Essentially much ado about nothing, as to what one picks as the "official reason" for applying. The list of acceptable reasons covers most anything relevant.

As noted, didn't matter what I'd checked the first time I applied some years ago (think it was hunting?), because our sheriff has put Self Defense on every LTCF I've gotten since then. All of which have been picture ID and laminated.

As I said above when I apply I check all boxes except for employment, on my LTCF I have listed under reason to carry, SD HF T C, they listed everything I checked, Self Defense, Hunting and Fishing, Target shooting, and Collecting. Don't know as I'll ever need to justify one reason or the other as mentioned above you can just say your carrying for defense and observing your 2nd amendment rights, but it can't hurt, our sherrifs office is very pleasant to deal with when it comes to processing and issuing LTCF, but if for some reason I was dealing with an undereducated person in a position of authority they could look at it and see I am allowed to carry for multiple reasons, just like to be prepared.
