I passed a rooster on the way to work this morning, standing tall and proud next to someone's mailbox. The vicinity is mostly wooded, but he was very near a brushy marsh so I imagine that's where he spent the winter. I've wondered on occasion whether that spot might hold woodcock (it's in a safety zone), but it never occurred to me that there might be a ringneck hiding in there.

There are no stocking grounds in the immediate area, but it's about three miles from the nearest game lands as the pheasant flies so I imagine that's where he came from. I was thrilled to see that he survived this nasty winter, but I hope he doesn't develop a habit of standing next to Rt. 30 because he might not make it to the summer.

Thumbs up and fingers crossed!
