hello, noobe here, my buddy is trying to get his old kentucky 33'' barrel 1:66 twist , to shoot ANYTHING,
so far it patterns, no groups, maybe 20'' at 25 yards ? lets see ? he's tried 175gr, powerbelts and 80 grains shockey gold, 70 grains of T7, that one blew the sidelock screws off.and hammer went to full cock.
tried 220 grain conicals ? [sp] 60grain T7, no go.
70 grain shocky gold, .. then tried round balls, couldnt even find the balls on paper.
he threw the rifle in the back of the pickup, and drove off mad....
i wishes he would slug the bore, i've never seen a rifle shoot so bad.

p.s. i also thinks ? he should just go with the powerbelts in an INLINE. with the faster twist.
also his rifle is a caplock.
If it is a Caplock, it ISN'T an Inline...an inline is a ignition system that is directly behind the powder charge.. a caplock is NOT An Inline, the cap is struck at the side and the small flame from it goes down thru the tube and ignites the powder from the side...

Throwing the rifle in the back of the truck is NOT Good for it..How old is your buddy?

Get rid of the Shocky's gold sticks and get Black Powder and work with that...start with 70 grains behind a low grain power belt!

Is he resting the rifle?
If so, is he Resting the BARREL on the rest to shoot or is he Resting the STOCK on the rest when shooting?

IF he is NOT Resting the rifle to shoot it, get a rest and USE it...IF he is Resting the Barrel on the Rest, STOP THAT, Get the STOCK on the Rest!

How are you and your buddy trying to shoot this thing in?

Explain it, not just the powder and bullets, HOW are you 2 shooting this rifle?
What type of set up are you using?
Picnic table with a rest?
Off Hand standing?
Kneeling?

Give us a little info on how the shooting is being done!

And get Black Powder.. those sticks are made for Center Ignited Systems that are TRUE Inlines...it can be used, but isn't what those caplocks were made to be shot with in them!

well for one thing.... i did tell him to not get mad. its a full stock kentucky rifle, on solid bench.sand bags, front, and rear. cannot help but just use the stock. he;s 55 years old. and i might add, he is one [censored] of a shot with his o3' springfield, i've seen him shoot trukeys heads off with that rifle.
im not shooying it, im just sitting back on porch, watching him out in pasture.
he's mad, wont listen to me... im ''trying'' to tell him to go back to round ball's and patches. cause it's 1:66 twist.
but his brother told him, it'll shoot sabots just fine...[how would he know?]
im just .. trying to convince him , just go buy an INLINE with fast 1:28 twist, cause he's dead set on using powerbelts.
i've used my pop's old lyman trade rifle 54, with patch and ball. for years, clover/leifs at 75. sooo... im just saying...

1:66 twist is a patch and roundball rifle!
Also, what his Brother said is EXACTLY True.. YEP, they Sure will shoot them powderbelts.. but that 1:66 twist was Intended for PATCH and BALL!
The gun will go boom and those power belts will fly out the end, but they are not really going to hold groups for they are intended for the 1:48 and lower twist rifles..

So, what his brother told him is true....Rifle will shoot them, rifle will go boom and powerbelt will go flying out the end of the barrel, but that is about it!

and the Shocky Sticks....WHY?
Was that another 1 of his brother's doings?

Get him to get Black Powder and Patchs and Round Balls and work on a load for it!

i guess it was another . of his older brothers myths,

he just called gripping about it, i faked and said signal goings bad, sent him texts to go back to ball and real black powder.
im tired of it. he say he throw it in lake, if he cannot gets it to shoot. im sick of it. maybe he SHOULD throw it in lake.
or just give it to me.
i've known this guy for 40 years, but have never seen him so bullheaded about something.

it goes like this...
why wont my rifle shoot like your dad's.... i say: get ball and patch..
he say : but brother say powerbelts they will work.
i say: why ? you've seen with your own eye's me and my pop. git 2 inch groups @ 100 with patch and ball.
he say: but they say jim shockey uses this powder.!!
....
i walk away.

It sounds as if a)- something very basic is not right (wrong size projectiles?) b) somethig is very wrong with the rifling. Just a guess. However, the other aspect is that it sounds as if you buds level of frustration had pegged the needle. Anyhow, if he does throw it in a lake then maybe soemone will find it in a couple hundread years and wonder how it got there.

Could also be that the crown might be knocked out.Look for ANY slight nicks on the very end of the muzzle. If so when the projectile is leaving the barrel, that nick is pulling it off course.

wow, what a thread.
well i for one agree with you, i think ? he should slug the bore some how ? and find out what the true bore size is, but, as of now, i ain't talking to him.
his son tells me its still in the back of the pickup truck. and it's been nothing but rain all day.
old ? its probly 20 years old, i just flat gave up.
so, his son and i. agreed to get him a CVA wolf ''INLINE''
for christmas, i buy it, his son pays for it, [they are great hunting pal's]
in the meanstime, the boy is going to sneek it out of the pickup, and clean, and putt it up.
the boy is just trying to make peace, so hopefully, outta sight/outta mind.
my honest opinion of the way he's acting is ....he's an [censored].
yes, it just makes my blood boil. but ? maybe ? after he gets this ''INLINE'' he'll sell it to me super cheep

Sounds like it is one of those CVA, Eibar, Jukar, Spanish guns from the mid 1970's. There were two basic lock styles. cheap and trash. No fly in the tumbler and heavy trigger pulls. The gun was probably sold for a max load of 70 grains of 3fg. And it has slow twist shallow rifling with a crappy crown on the muzzle. The crown is easy enought to fix. A fluted countersink turned slowly BY HAND with a brace with only very light down pressure, will clean up and make a proper crown in seconds.

Sounds mostly like a patch ball combo problem.

Patch could be tearing on the crown, bullet could be gouged by sharp edge on the crown. Hard to say with out seeing it.

The very early spanish repro locks made to be used with bolsters welded to the barrel were pretty bad. The later ones used with drum and nipple were far better although still cheapo jobs. HOWEVER, with a little care and understanding, they are quite capable of 7 inch 100 yds groups off a bench and taking deer.
