Thinking of having a TC pack rifle built for this and would like some opinions. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for large chunks of lead at modest velocity and this one has had me thinkin on a build for a while.

That would be a hammer, I think the Cal is based upon the 348 Winchester, would check with MGM or bullberry for the barrel or maybe you can rechamber a 500 SW some how i think wild west guns make the ammo

i have a 50 alaskanbuilt on a marlin action, the 50 alaskan was built off the 348 winchester case. but now the 50 has cases ready to buy for reloading or already loaded starline, buffalo bore, etc, theres a company up in alaska hat has 900 grain loads , i fire the 600 grain ones from my 50 alaskan, but buffalo bore has good 450, and 500 grain ones ready to fire, theres a couple good gunsmiths doing 50s now reg noman, brook guns , but if you want one built and want to deal with one of the best out there, you contact www.sskindustries.com and speak to jd jones, are brian his main gunsmith they are located in wintersville oh. reg noman builds his 50s on the marlin 336s and 1895 actions. jd on alot of actions but i dont think he does one on the marlin lever. good luck on your project, the alaskan makes a heck of a bear gun .if you like big bore guns have jd jones build you 577 nitro or 600 jd nitro express on the 458 ruger number 1 singal shot action, talk about fun, it dont get any better then that. and yes wild west up in alaskan also has loaded rounds and builds the 50 alaskan, good luck hope you build your gun

Funny you should mention the 600 from JD as we talked about it back and forth a great deal a number of yrs ago via e-mail.... It's based off the 577 nitro case just blown strait walled.... He said it was a bugger to load in and out of the gun without taking "too much metal" out of the action for clearance of the case rim so most ppl just turn the rims down smaller all and all it sounded like more headache than it was worth and even he suggested to stick to a standard 577nitro with its tapered case as it can be slightly angled into the rifle..... i just really liked the .62 bullet diameter so I scrapped the idea on puttin those .62 pills into a Ruger. Got to lookin into the 600 O.K. In a bolt gun now instead.... Well... And this "little" 50 Alaskan project... Lol if you've never seen the 600 O.K. Look it up on YouTube pretty amazing lookin.... 900 gr bullet at 2450fps on the max loads!!!! And if you're into cast bullets then they go to 1040gr from beartooth.

back in the early 90s i shot side by side with jd, and his 50 sharps ,577 nitro at a range he took me and my buddy to, we shot the rugers open sights at steel gongs about 100 yards out, the 577 with the 750 grainers hit the gong which was about a 10 inch circle every time , very accurete big bore indeed, i have been following the 600 over kill and the 700 nitro for some time now, if memory serves me right theres a 12 gauge super shotgun shooting blown out 50 bmg cases over 1000 grains, but i think jd has them all beat with his 950 jdj shooting over 3400 grain bullet, look it up on his website its crazy, but as for jdj i think his shop is one of the best out there in craftsman ship he has done alot of work on some of my big boomers and his jd hard chrome and sob scope mounts are great.i always did buy and shoot the big bores from the 80s to about 2003, but now the go to gun for me is a 416 rem built on a sako action from jdj.i will leave anything over the 400 grain mark to you young guys to have fun with , not saying me being 45 yrs old is old lol. have fun with it and build your 50 alaskan you only go around once in this world.

Myself and a buddy of mine in highschool wanted one of those 950s so bad we could taste it until we found out that we could buy new pickups for the price!!! By the time I got a job that even came close to funding such an endeavor McMillan stopped producing their very limited run of 20mm Vulcan actions that JD was using to build em.... Anzio ironworks has a new big boomer that they put in their 20mm action that takes the 20 Vulcan case and necks it down to 50 cal much like McMillan's 50 Fat Mac but with supposed better results.... Looks like a 22-250 stretched in every direction.... I'll def have to agree with ya on the quality of work commin out of JDs shop. I've shot a buddies 470nitro that was built there and it was flawless in both fit and function. Prolly the best Ruger no1 I've ever seen. My only gripe was that it had a recoil suppression stock and as it colapsed the nice highly checkered grip would try to scrub off your thumb on your fireing hand as well as let it rise severely in recoil... If I precompressed the stock by holding it extra tight till I could feel the stock bottom out in its stops and just took the recoil instead of letting the gun do so it was a dream to shoot.
