44mag Help

Hit the rang today with the 44mag. At 25 yards with 2-3 threads left before the rear sight left loose and the front blade buried in the V of the back sight I was shooting 18" high.

I am shooting 240grn Magtech HP's.

What should I do?

Need to know what the weapon is?? And what kind of sights?? Impossible to give advice if we don't know what you are shooting??

If it is a rifle then just change the front bead.

If it is a revolver with a fixed front sight then you have a problem. That far offat 25 yards sounds like a return to the factory problem. Especially if the load you are shooying is a standard factory load. No way it should be off that far at that distance.

However if you are screwing the rear sight(the only way it could let loose) up then you are going the wrong way. You need to lower the rear sight in order to lower your POI. Tom.

Its an Encore 12" pistol barrel. I set the rear sight to mid level, shot twice and saw I was high. I generously ran the rear screw in (dropping the rear sight) shot twice and it was shooting higher. I ran the screw in until it was bottomed out and it went higher, at this point I was baffled. I ran the screw out till there was a few threads left and it brought the POI down.

Today was a pistol shoot in trip at the range. I had started with the 30-06 pistol and finalized the 50 yard sight in before going to the 44mag. After final tweaks on the sights of the 30-06, I shot a 3 shot group approx 3" in diameter. While I was waiting for the 30-06 to cool down I took the 44 mag out only to end up with more questions than answers.

After thinking it was operator error I took the 30-06 and shot a 2 shot group at 50 yards with the same POI and similar group size as I started the night out with. I also shot 2, 2 shot groups 'free hand' to see if my POI would change and how it would shoot while hunting and got similar POI and groups.

The one thing that I forgot was how much the 30-06 kicks... its shoot-able by all means, but its like shooting a box of 12 gauge 3" mags and then picking up the 10-22. The 30-06 will make a nice tree stand gun where I have a rest to shoot from and the 44mag will be nice for freehand brush hunting.

Not familiar with Encore pistol barrels, but that certainly seems backwards.
Encore barrels are no different than any others. Raise the rear sight and you raise the POI., lower the rear sight and you lower the POI.

I had the exact same problem with a .35 remington barrel on my contender, never did get it figured out. It's been sitting in the safe for over a year now.
Green horn iron sight boy back....

I took the 44 out this afternoon. When I dropped the rear sight the entire way down and put the top of the front sight at the bottom of the rear sight ( so the sight picture was a U and not a W ) and I shot a group about 2" high at 25 yards. I figured there might be some difference in POI between 25 and 50, but at 50 yards with the same sight picture I shot about 12" high.

Should I loosen/raise the rear sight or should I change the front sight height? I plan on shooting this 25-75 yards.
Jon,

I can understand the bullet rising from 25 yards to 50 yards. However, what I think is that you have a problem with that barrel that isn't "fixable" via this or any other forum or even with any aftermarket sight....unless you install a front sight that is so high, it would look stupid.

I would call T\C and talk to them about this. I've called them about a few things when I had a problem with a Contender frame that I bought. I bought the frame used and it was made something like 10 years ago. They were very nice. I sent it back and they re-did the whole frame and didn't charge me a dime!!

Nice people to deal with. Give 'em a call and tell them what your experiencing.

I took the 44 out tonight... After switching ammo the 25, 50 yards groups are dead on.
