You can squeeze a 257 into a short action. Works exceptionally well with round nose bullets. With spitzers it's well off the lands though since it has to be seated to 2.800" max OAL. To be fair, the Bob should really be on a medium length action. At any rate, my 257 is a short action and does just fine even short-seated to fit the magazine. I do prefer 117gr RN slugs though for deer considering most all of my hunting with it is for deer under 200 yards...usually well under 100.
