22 cal deer result

There was some talk about restricting what calibers could be used for deer and thankfully that was squashed. I know quite a few people who have taken many deer with 223, 22/250, etc..... and have had no issues. As people that actually know guns will say, it is about bullet placement and bullet selection. My TC Encore in 22/250 is my furbearer gun but I have always wanted to take a deer with it. So off to the deer woods I went today with some Factory Remington 55 grain pointed soft points for a solo hunt. The shoot within 1 inch of the Winchester 55 grain hollow points I use when coyote hunting.

Much to my surprise on the public cooperator property I was hunting, I saw 9 deer and managed to sneak up on this one as it was feeding. The brisk wind helped. Broadside at 70 yards, slightly down hill. Bullet entered behind the shoulder, exited and broke the far leg on the way out. The deer dropped at the shot and it was over. I was impressed. I might have to tote the 22/250 on some more deer hunts. Checked this box off.

Nothing lives with a hole in the heart or lungs. No matter what caliber or grain bullet. It up to the shooter to know his own limits and abilities more than the limits of the caliber.

Nice! I too have wanted to kill a deer with my 22-250. Think I may carry it the rest of season as the spot Im watching 90 yards would be my max shot, but more likely 50-60 Its a Savage Axis but is deadly accurate at 100 with 55gr Fusions below is a 3 shot group at 100 off a rest.

These are from a doe I took last year with my dad's .225, shooting factory Winchester 50-grain soft points. The 20-yard blood trail was ample, and peeling back the hide revealed more than sufficient damage to make a clean kill. The heart was in tatters, but I have little doubt a lung or neck shot would have also resulted in a clean kill. I knew that gun would require a focused shot, but I was pleasantly surprised how well it performed.

Use a stout enough bullet, and place it where it needs to go, and theres no reason they shouldnt work. Blasting at running deer prob isnt a good idea for most folks with a 22 cal though. Much as I love vmaxs, I wouldnt use a bullet that fragile for medium game. But with bullet technology going like it has for the last few years, there are plenty of bonded and monolithic bullets thatll penetrate like a much heavier bullet, and all the while with good expansion. Staying off the big bones when you can is a good idea.

I really enjoyed this report. I was definitely one of those who sent in my comments about the proposed legislation to ban .22 caliber for deer. Very glad they saw in the end how stupid that proposal was.
My .22 cal rig is my .222 Rem in model 788 loaded up with 60 grain Nosler Partitions.

I too am not a fan of blanket statement minimum caliber sizes for deer hunting (elk sure but not deer). I used to always think 243 was flirting with being under sized not based on experience but just that it’s to small mentality. Well I no longer feel that way...3 years 3 shoots and my son has successfully, ethically and quickly killed 2 doe and a buck with his. He shoots 87 grain ammo and that thing is lights out on deer.

Do I feel 22 is too small for deer? Maybe but I do not have personal experience with anything chambered in 22 so I say leave it up to the shooter and their ability to decide.

I’m not an expert by any means, but I’ve shot a lot of groundhogs and coyotes with 223, 220 Swift, and 22-250. That being said, I believe they are all capable of killing deer, but definitely wouldn’t be my first choice.

I strongly believe that if you are **** bent on using the 20-22 calibers on deer sized game, you need to seriously look into reloading appropriate bullets. Unfortunately, most of the 20-22 caliber factory ammo is geared toward varmint and predator

factory loaded barnes and noslers work great as do others. people just have to stay away from the varmint loads.

I've been thinking about this myself lately. My 22-250 shoots 55 gr VMaxs really well, but I know I don't want to try them on deer - my issue has been finding 22 caliber interbonds, accubonds, gmx, partitions, or anything else that would be an acceptable deer bullet.

There is a few really good hunting bullets out now in the 70grain range, the problem is that many rifles in these "varmint calibers" don't have the proper barrel twist to stabilize them properly. They're available to reloaders at least, i'm not too sure about loaded ammo.

Federal has plenty of choices. (Filter on .223 or 22-250 and medium game) Finding them in stock could be a challenge. Ammoseek.com is your friend. :)

Look at a company called Hammer Bullets, I have been using their bullets in my 6.5 PRC and I have to admit they have worked exceedingly well on game so far.
