I heard of a few people making 17hmr's with 25 grainers sitting on top. I know it's a bad idea, especially with pulling a bullet out of a rimmie, but then i got to thinking... How safe would that be to actually shoot? Wouldnt a 25 grainer mean more pressure? Which would cause split necks?
So could you actually, drop a 25 grain bullet, ontop of a 17hmr case, and do nothing else.. And actually be safe pressure wise? Not like I would try it, but, it got me thinking of saftey

A 25 grain bullet is a lot longer than a 17gr so to seat it deep enough to chamber you would reduce case capacity and have a significant rise in pressure. For guns that do not fully support the rim you would likely have case failure where the rim blows out. Some of the 17HMR ammo was being loaded with a duplex powder, not sure what they are using today but I wouldn't take a chance.
