my question is do you think this is too small for the job or should i use my 22 mag or should i go even bigger. i would really like to get one of those new 17 hornets, anybody try one of those yet

The 17HMR discussion has been beat to death on here. Try doing a search on the 17HMR. Smallest caliber I would use on a coyote is a 22 Hornet.

While fox hunting a few years back I killed a 50lb male coyote with my .17HMR. The shot was placed directly between the eyes at 75 yards. Two weeks later I killed a 31 lb female at 80 yards with a direct shot to the chest. That same night I shot at and hit another coyote but it ran off and I never located it.
The next year I wounded three more coyotes with the .17HMR. In my opinion it is just a little too light for coyotes. I switched to .223 and out of a dozen or so kills I have only had one coyote I couldn't find. The down side is the .223 is not always fur friendly on fox. I just could not find the perfect .223 round for both fox and coyote so last month, after a long search I purchased a .17 Hornet. So far I am really impressed with it. I have been using the .17 Hornet while fox hunting hoping for the occasional coyote sighting. I have killed a number of fox with the .17 Hornet with very little fur damage. However, when targeting coyotes I can't break away from using the .223. I hope this helps.

If you consider coyotes the 17 Hornet is light. I agree with Beagler... go with a .22 Hornet or a 17 fireball. If you get the .17 Fireball there is no need for having a .17 Hornet and a .223 unless you like and can afford two guns. The .223 is better for yotes as Night Eyes says but if you can only get one gun make it a 22 hornet or a 17 fireball. Just my .02 for what it is worth Matt. If you check out PPHA you will find info about a new .22 caliber rimfire that is supposed to way outperform the .22 mag. I'd have my eye on that if I lived in special regs.

I think thats another 17 rimfire super mag or somthing 3000+ fps with a 25gr bullet, but i prefer the 204s iv started loading with a 26gr varmit grenade at 4450! haha havnt shot anything yet

Just read a ton about the new round. First ive heard about it so far. I will be keeping an eye out because I also live in special regs.

If this performs the way they say it will, I will be seriously looking into it. My guess is savage for the manufacturer of the first rifle. They sell the crap out of the .17hmr and are resonable in price, they seem to be ahead of the game when it comes to performance / price.

More information to be released tomorrow, I'll be waiting. For special regs guys this could be like cheating

I hunt yotes with a .17 HMR, and I make sure that thing is on point when target shooting. Shot it a few weeks ago at bear camp and was shooting primers out of old .30-06 loads at about 75 yards.
That being said, I also won't shoot 200 yards in the dark at a yote either, but most of the places we hunt are thickets where shots are much closer.

Pound for pound isn't 17 hmr just as capable as 22 mag?

No its not even close, were comparing a 17gr bullet to 40-50 gr bullets, the 22 has over 100# more muzzle energy than the 17... If i was shooting prarie dogs at long ranges I might use a 17 but thats the only time I would consider it, its not much faster either, the 17 does 2550 with a 17gr bullet, I have winchester supreem he 34 gr jhp that do 2120 witg double the lead, my cousin shot a coyote witg my marlin wmr on their farm in beaver from 177y broadside and it punched a fairly nasty hole clear through it.

If your hunting at night you need somthing that puts them down with no problem, the 223 or 204 or the 17 centerfires are the best choice, when do do you ever see a coyote just standing around offering a perfect shot? try stoping a running coyote from any distance with a 17hmr and see what happens...
