I am looking at the possibility of reloading 12 ga hulls with hunting loads, although the hulls were originally loaded with target loads. The hulls would be Remington Gun Club (black and green) with Windjammer wads containing # 4 or 5 shot. I haven't decided on the make or brand of powder I would use as this depends on what I can find. I would use a somewhat reduced charge of powder as I never max out anything I reload when it comes to the powder. So my questions is centered on the safety of using Gun Club hulls for hunting loads. Recommendations and opinions will be appreciated.

Gun Clubs have the same design as STS's and Nitro's they are just not as good IMO. Why, because I don't like the steel head instead of brass. They also use the same loading data as the STS's and Nitro's.

My handicap load which is also quite the nice hunting load is:

Remington Nitro Hull
Windjammer Wad
17.5 grains of 700X (Bushing #29 for MEC)
Winchester W209 Primer

I think the book listed the FPS on that loads around 1200-1225 if I remember correctly. I don't really care because it smokes clays for the 27 yard line!

Here are my loads for pheasants. Remington nitro hulls,1 and 1/4 ounce loads #5 or #6 shot.SP12 wads and 24 gr. Universal powder @ 1220 FPS.

Or Remington STS hulls,1 and 1/4 ounce #5 shot
Remington SP12 wad,and 35.5 gr. of Blue Dot @ 1275 fps.
I use the different hulls for my 1 and 1/4 ounce loads mostly so I can tell at a glance which powder charge is in them.

Factory Gun Clubs use a totally different wad then the Nitros or STS. STS's use a figure 8 while Gunclubs use a RXP. However for reloading gun clubs can use anything. I use a Winchester Wad in mine. Just follow the load books and you will be fine.

When I used a 12 ga. to hunt small game. I used my standard trap load. I just changed the shot size to #5 or #6. Certainly you wouldn't need anything heavier. Now I wouldn't use more than 7/8th oz. from my 16 ga.
